PRESS RELEASE: WomenOnGuard.com Celebrates International Women’s Day 2008
International Women’s Day is March 8th. WomenOnGuard.com will be celebrating from March 1st through March 8th. The website will be offering a “buy one get one free” promotion on select brands of pepper spray. This exemplifies WomenOnGuard.com’s determination to help prevent violent crimes against women. It also highlights the importance of women’s safety issues around the world.
Indian Beach, NC February 29, 2008. International Women’s Day was first launched in 1911 in Copenhagen, Germany. This observance has spread throughout the world and focuses on women’s oppression and inequality that still takes place to this day. International Women’s Day is known to have changed women’s rights to work, vote, hold political office and end discrimination. Thanks to this women’s movement, the “Triangle Fire” that took place on March 25, 1911 in New York City, the labor legislation in the U.S.A. has changed to protect not just women but all labor workers. This disastrous factory fire in 1911 killed 140 working women. Most of these women were Jewish and Italian immigrants. The observance of this day also was utilized by European women while trying to end World War I. Many rallies and campaigns were run by groups of women to show their solidarity against the war. These and many other events that have been taking place around the world are initiated using the International Women’s Day as the time to show the power and unity of women worldwide.
“We want to take advantage of this commemorative date, to highlight what I call, the epidemic of violence against women in this country”, says Martha Z. Martinez, Co-Owner of WomenOnGuard.com. She states, “Too many women are sexually assaulted or battered so often, that the crime has become an everyday, or I should rephrase, an every 2 minute occurrence in this country”. She mentions that women should take their personal safety into their own hands. She goes on to say, “Many women are biologically physically weaker than men, so they need to carry a self-defense product for protection”.
One of the most important characteristics about the WomenOnGuard.com website is that it sells only non-lethal products. Susan Eaton, Co-Owner of the website, mentions; “we don’t want to add to crime, we want to prevent it and by using non-lethal means, we avoid having casualties in our society.” This 2 women owned website differs from others because they market their products toward women and discourage arming women with deadly weapons. They offer hotlines, safety tips and donate products to women’s crisis centers around the nation on a monthly basis.
WomenOnGuard.com sells non-lethal, self-defense products such as pepper spray, Mace, stun guns, Taser C2, personal alarms and home protection products.
You must be 18 years of age to purchase pepper spray or stun gun products.
Pepper spray is legal in all 50 states, however some cities and states have restrictions on sizes and strengths. There are some states where the stun gun and Taser are illegal. WomenOnGuard.com does have a “State Restrictions” category on its website however, accepts no responsibility for its accuracy or completeness.

Are You or Your Daughter in College?
Action must be taken to reduce these numbers and one simple thing that women can do is to arm themselves with some sort of self-defense item. Something as simple as just an inexpensive pepper spray container, can dramatically change the outcome of this violent crime. Men sometimes carry these as chains to hold their keys. If men find it useful, women should find it 2, 3 or 10 times more useful for themselves! Simply using a pepper spray that has a quick key release keychain can be very handy. You normally need something to hold your keys anyway, so why not use a pepper spray keychain?
Pepper spray will not kill anyone but it will stop an attacker by making his whole face burn! The irritation is so bad, that his eyes will swell up and shut therefore making him temporarily blind! The pepper spray can make his skin and mucous membranes (nose & throat) so irritated that it can have him coughing and choking. The irritation will last several minutes and give you time to get away.
It is unbelievable that such a simple product can help so much in moments as horrifying as these. But there are also 2 important limitations when using pepper spray and keep these in mind if you ever need it. First, pepper spray works best when sprayed right side up (just remember that your hairspray won't work if you hold it upside down). Second, if there is too much wind it is not recommended to use especially if the wind is blowing against you because you might get sprayed back! Probably the best kind of pepper you can get is Pepper Foam. Pepper Foam works best because it is so thick and sticky that it saturates the attacker's face even in windy conditions. Pepper Foam, like most other pepper sprays, also comes with an identifying orange UV dye that helps police capture an attacker if he escapes because his face will be stained orange as evidence!

PRESS RELEASE: Pepper Spray Donation By WomenOnGuard.com Helps Ohio Rape Crisis Center
WomenOnGuard.com was launched on the premise of preventing violent crimes committed against women. The website gives women several options for personal self-defense. Sexual assaults continue to increase in our nation. What we can do, as a business owned by women, is to help in the prevention of assaults by empowering women with these options.
Indian Beach, NC February 8, 2008. The February recipient of pepper spray products, donated by WomenOnGuard.com, is the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center provides education, workshops, support groups and programs for survivors of sexual violence and those who support them.
Susan Eaton, co-principal of WomenOnGuard.com, states that, “Our mission is to empower women with the options of self-defense. Our vision is to be recognized as one of the most respected organizations, which contributed to the prevention of violent crimes committed against women.”
Ms. Eaton goes on to say that, “there are various types and styles of non-lethal, self-defense products that women can carry. We encourage everyone to be prepared which means following safety tips and carrying a self-defense product that will aid in your defense should you find yourself in an unpleasant or uncomfortable situation.
Just showing a would-be attacker that you are carrying pepper spray or a stun gun, is a deterrent in itself”.
What are your options for self-defense?
The popularity of pepper spray has grown tremendously due to the increase in violent crimes. Pepper spray comes in various sizes, strengths and shapes. Some are small enough to attach to a keychain and some are shaped like a tube of lipstick for concealment. There is even a pepper spray that looks like a pager.
A stun gun can immobilize an attacker for several minutes leaving them disoriented with a loss of balance and in a confused state of mind. Stun guns come in varying sizes, voltages and shapes. Some are so small they can fit in the palm of your hand. There are others that are disguised as a cell phone.

Death Toll From The "Choking Game"
ATLANTA - At least 82 youths have died from the so-called "choking game," according to the first government count of fatalities from the tragic fad.
As many as 20 percent of teens and preteens play the game, sometimes in groups, according to estimates based on a few local studies. But nearly all the deaths were youths who played alone, according to the count compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC started the research after receiving a letter last year from a Tacoma, Wash., physician who said her 13-year-old son died from playing the game in 2005.
"At the time I had never heard of this," said Dr. Patricia Russell, whose son was found hanging in his closet, but later learned he had talked to a friend about it.
"One thing that really needs to happen — and is starting to happen now — is to get more information about how common this is," she said.
The CDC counted cases from news reports and advocacy organizations in the years 1995 through 2007, totaling 82 fatalities of children ages 6 to 19. They did not include deaths in which it was unclear if the death was from the choking game or if it was a suicide. They also did not include deaths that involved autoerotic asphyxiation, which is self-strangulation during masturbation and is said to be mainly done by teenage boys or men.
The 82 deaths were spread across 31 states. Nearly 90 percent were boys, at an average age of about 13, the CDC found.
Three or fewer deaths were reported from 1995 through 2004. They jumped to 22 in 2005, 35 in 2006 and at least nine in 2007. It's not clear what drove the increase in recent years, investigators said.
The report is being published this week in a CDC publication, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
CDC officials urged parents to be aware the fad exists, and to watch for possible warning signs like bloodshot eyes, marks on the neck, frequent and severe headaches, disorientation after spending time alone, and ropes, scarves or belts tied to bedroom furniture or doorknobs or found knotted on the floor.
The authors acknowledged that 82 is probably an undercount. They could not rely on death certificates, which do not differentiate choking-game deaths from other unintentional strangulation deaths. Instead, they relied mainly on a news database that is large but doesn't include all media outlets.
It's likely that there are about 100 U.S. choking game deaths each year, said Dr. Tom Andrew, New Hampshire's chief medical examiner, who has been studying the phenomenon for several years.
Andrew said many coroners and medical examiners likely label the deaths as suicides because they don't have the time or resources to interview a victim's friends and look for alternate explanations.
Many of the children who died from the choking game were described as bright, athletic students who apparently were intrigued by a method of getting high that doesn't involve drugs or alcohol, he said.
They watch it on YouTube, or hear about it in school or at summer camp, said Sharron Grant, a Canadian woman who was a founder of an advocacy group called Games Adolescents Shouldn't Play (GASP).
Choking game fatalities are not nearly as common as suicide deaths among youths who choose hanging or suffocation. About 5,100 such suicide deaths were reported from 1995 through 2007, and while it's possible some were unrecognized choking game deaths, most were believed to be actual suicides, said Robin Toblin, a CDC epidemiologist.
The game is also known by names that include "blackout," "space monkey" and "pass out," Toblin and others said.
Variations of the game have been around for decades, but the trend of doing it alone seems to be recent, Andrew said.

Daily Commute Dangers
Leaving the workplace at the end of the day is one of the most riskiest times women face today. Danger while driving in traffic or being a passenger in a vehicle is only one threat of the total picture.
If you drive home, getting into your vehicle is a maneuver that attackers focus on when seeking a victim. It cannot be stressed enough, how you handle yourself while walking and getting into your car in a parking lot or garage. Besides the usual issue of being aware of your surroundings, you need to plan ahead before you even start getting out of your workplace's door. If you are walking alone without a guard or a friend you need to carry some sort of self-defense product such as a stun gun. Leave your workplace with one of these products in your hand and ready to shoot if necessary, along with your keys too. Do not leave these items in your purse or pocket while walking towards your car in the parking garage, this will only delay your response if someone attacks you! Don't get to the car and start searching for your keys, this just adds more time for a criminal to hurt you. Always try to keep in mind that you need to get into your car quickly and lock the door immediately when inside. Make sure you look around your car from a distance to see if there are any suspicious individuals around it. Also look around the garage or parking lot, as stated earlier, be aware of all that is around you! This is not the time to start planing or thinking about what you will be doing when you get home... As you get closer, check the interior, including the back seats before opening the door.
If you take public transportation, the same advice should be taken; be aware at all times of your surroundings. Keep a stun gun or other product available in your purse where it is easy to grab quickly. If the product has a power switch, turn it on before hand. It is not recommended to take out when many people are around you, simply because it could scare them, but if you are in a public transportation area that is relatively empty, take your self defense product out in plain view. There are studies that suggest that this actually deters a criminal from approaching you if he sees you have a weapon and you're not an easy target.
A self-defense product such as a stun gun is an electrical self-defense device that uses high voltage to stop an attacker. Touching a person with the prongs on the stun gun quickly immobilizes the attacker. It causes disorientation and loss of balance and leaves the attacker in a passive and confused mental and physical condition for several minutes. However, because the amperage is very low, no serious or permanent injury is inflicted.
The stun gun is designed to key into the nervous system. It dumps its energy into the muscles at a high pulse frequency that makes the muscles work very rapidly, but not efficiently. This rapid work cycle depletes blood sugar by converting it to lactic acid all in just seconds. The resulting energy loss makes it difficult to move and function. At the same time, the tiny neurological impulses that travel throughout the body to direct muscle movement are interrupted. This causes disorientation and loss of balance and leaves the attacker in a passive and confused condition for several minutes. Still, there is no significant effect on the heart and other organs.
As a general rule, a one-half second contact can repel and startle the attacker, giving some pain and muscle contraction. One to two seconds can cause muscle spasms and a dazed mental state. Over three seconds can cause loss of balance and muscle control, mental confusion and disorientation. Realize that 3 seconds is quite a long time when in a physical struggle. Every person is different and will react differently to the effects of a stun gun. What may put one person down in 3 seconds could take 5 seconds on another person.
The electrical shock that emits from the unit will not pass from the person being stunned to the person doing the stunning. The effect is localized only in the affected area and does not pass through the body. Even if you or the attacker is wet or standing in water, you will not get shocked. Stun Guns are legal in most states. An alternative to a stun gun is the taser C2 or pepper spray.
Unfriendly Dogs While You Try to Workout!
If you plan to carry a dog spray repellent such as MUZZLE, get familiar with the shape of the container and carry it in your hand to be prepared if a dog starts running towards you. When using a spray repellent, you should aim toward the aggressive dog's nose, mouth and eyes and quickly get away from him. These pepper based sprays reach a distance of approximately 10-12 feet. Remember always to use the spray in the upright position or it might not work!
When dogs are sprayed, usually they run away or rub their face on the ground to try to take the painful irritant off. The effects usually wear out within a few minutes and it is harmless to dogs.
If you plan to carry an ultrasonic dog repeller, keep it handy for quick use. These devices are the most humane way to keep unfriendly dogs away. They emit a sound that humans usually can't hear but dogs definitely can! The ultrasonic waves will cause dogs discomfort and make them go away. You simply have to just point the unit toward the dog and push the power button. You can keep the button depressed until the dog leaves. The ultrasonic dog repeller mentioned above has a LED light to let you know it is emitting the sound. The light dims or turns off when it's time to replace the battery.
