Holiday Party Safety Tips

We all love to party during the Holidays and New Years! You can enjoy your parties even more if you take some precautions. Unfortunately where there are parties, there is alcohol. Where there is alcohol, there is sometimes violence. Violence  during the Holidays is common and prevention is key, in order to enjoy the season. Unfortunately, women more than men, are victims of rape or sexual assault crimes during the Holidays, at New Years Eve parties or in nightclubs for that matter. Please remember the following safety tips that may prevent sexual assaults or other crimes:

Party or Nightclub Safety Tips
  • Never share drinks.
  • Only accept drinks from closed containers.
  • Never pour a drink from a punch bowl or pitcher.
  • Get your own drink and watch the bartender pour it.
  • Always introduce a stranger you just met, to your friends at a party or nightclub.
  • Never accept to leave with a stranger or a person you just met.
  • If there is not a designated driver, call a taxi or stay at a nearby hotel.
Before you go to a party or any other event, always carry a self defense weapon, besides remembering the safety tips. This should not just apply to Holiday parties but to year-round errands, work, school, nightclubs, concerts, etc. Just like you wear a seat belt while driving, you need to carry a pepper spray, stun gun, taser, rape whistle or personal alarm, while you are out and about. ALWAYS be prepared to defend yourself. DON'T be a victim of sexual assault or any other crime.

Make Your House Look Alive this Holiday

Leaving your house or apartment alone for the holidays? Don't let it become a burglar magnet, invest in a reasonably priced digital timer. Digital timers can be set so that they turn lights on and off in your home. Be it holiday decorations, a lamp or your TV set!

Burglars look for dark homes on the holidays, to rob people, and your home does not have to be a target! This is the best time of the year for burglars, but if they see lights go on and off in your home, they are far less likely to bother going into it. Outsmart them with digital timers in your house!

For more information, check out this Digital Timer with Random Features.

Notre Dame Hides Sexual Assault by Football Player

 Victim Commits Suicide
It's not enough that Yale University pledges encouraged rape last October by chanting, "no means yes, yes means anal", now the University of Notre Dame prefers to hide rape or sexual assault charges. The Notre Dame football game MUST go on!

Elizabeth "Lizzy" Seeberg committed suicide 9 days after the rape, yet the accused football player was allowed to play, while she overdosed on prescription medication. Notre Dame didn't even mention to the St. Joseph County Police Department, that was investigating the case, that she had reported a sexual assault.

What does that say about our society? What morals are we teaching our college sons & daughters about sexual assault?

Like all social events, there are always some concerns. Halloween, unfortunately carries with it some extra dangers. The fact that most people conceal their identity by wearing masks or makeup, makes it even more worrisome. Below we included some Halloween safety tips for children and adults:

  • Children should never enter the house or car of a stranger to get treats
  • Never eat treats that are unwrapped or any kind of fruit
  • Wear bright clothes or carry a flashlight so cars can see you
  • Avoid porches or homes that are dark
  • Take a personal alarm or cell phone, in case you are in danger
  • Go trick or treating in groups, preferably w/ adult supervision

Safety tips for Partying Adults
  • Always get your own drink at a party
  • Never take your eyes off of your drink
  • Never pour yourself a drink from an open container such as a punch bowl
  • Never accept a drink from someone you don't know, unless it is sealed
  • Introduce a person you just met, to your friends
  • Never leave the party with a person you just met

How Pepper Spray Works and The Different Types

Pepper spray has been around for a very long time. It was used by ancient armies, centuries ago! This self defense weapon, even though it's been around for ever and it's simple and easy to use, still has that horrible burning impact when someone gets sprayed by it. Not only does it burn the eyes so much that the attacker needs to close them shut, but it also makes them cough, non-stop! The fact that their eyes are closed, makes it possible for you to leave the scene safely. The secret ingredient is one of the most hottest peppers in the world, called Oleoresin Capsicum or OC for short.

Most pepper spray, now a days, have an invisible UV dye that aid police in identifying and detaining an attacker. Some Mace sprays even contain tear gas! Lets not forget that some attackers can be fierce dogs too and not just human! Mace also has Muzzle, which is a spray for defense against mean dogs too. There are also many types or forms of sprays. You can pick from 90 mph strong bursts or spray types that reach a distance of up to 25 feet! Not only do they come in different looking canisters that are disguised as lipstick, for example, but you can also choose how the pepper is shot toward an attacker. Streetwise pepper spray or Mace Brand personal defense sprays come in:

Stream (the most popular)
Gel
Foam
Fog
Powder (the newest kind)

Concealment is a new issue for some of us today. If you prefer to carry pepper spray without people knowing about it, perhaps to work or college, there are many shapes available and they can look like:

Lipstick
Perfume
Pager
Pen
Gun
Walking Weight
Baton
Tubular Thing
Sleek Thing

Yale University Pledges Encouraged Rape

This is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, yet Yale University, had a fraternity pledge that chanted, "no means yes, yes mean anal". A chant that was one of several they shouted which trivialized raping women. The fraternity's potential pledges, Delta Kappa Epsilon's Phi chapter (DKE), shouted these scary rape hinting chants in the middle of the night. To make matters worse they did this, right in front of where all the first year female students are housed! These women already have the odds against them. Statistics have shown that university or college women are 4 times more likely to get raped.

This is not acceptable. The members of DKE and it's pledges should be punished severely. Just having a forum, is not enough! Yale University should set an example and not let this slip by so easily. Yale University is suppose to have high standards in education as well as conduct. This is an institution where many of our future leaders will come from. What kind or morals will they spread on the future of our nation?

Domestic Violence Project Receives Pepper Spray Donation from Women On Guard™

 PRESS RELEASE:
Women On Guard™ donated pepper spray to the domestic violence UnderWings Project in Cleveland, Ohio.

Pompano Beach, FL, October 18th, 2010. The self defense products website, Women On Guard™ has donated pepper spray to the UnderWings Project after they requested to be a recipient of the on going donations that WomenOnGuard.com started back in 2007. The website donates on a regular basis, nationwide, to a women’s crisis center or similar cause. They sell pepper sprays, Mace, Tasers, stun guns, personal alarms and more. The website also includes hotlines, safety tips and a blog.

The UnderWings Project is a two sister joint effort to find preventative measures to save the lives of women caught-up in the cycle of domestic violence. Their mission is to provide programs and services designed to restore wholeness to those whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence. They provide educational, art, music therapy, motivational and safety training in their peer life support groups located in Cleveland and Maple Heights, Ohio in disclosed locations for safety purposes and in order to be accessible to more women. The UnderWings Project has been a self-funded, non-profit organization for almost four years until October 4, 2010. Thanks to The Allstate Foundation, they received their first major grant and now are able to proceed with their Employment, Retention, and Wellness Clinic.

Susan Eaton, one of the owners of Women On Guard mentioned, “It’s a shame that this topic comes up only when a famous person or celebrity is involved in it. Mel Gibson’s abuse toward his wife rose national exposure to this problem. Unfortunately it happens every day to many women in this country and around he world.” Susan stressed that it also doesn’t just hurt women but if they have children, it affects them as well. She also emphasized that a restraining order against the abuser, such as Mel Gibson, many times doesn’t work, and sometimes the women end up being killed.

Women On Guard wants to express that all of us could make a difference by being more observant of our family, friends and co-workers. Martha, the other owner of the website, said, “There are many Mel Gibson’s out there that need to be stopped!”

Below is a list of signs we can look for if we suspect someone we know is in a domestic violence situation:

-       Injuries or bruises and wearing long sleeves on hot days or sunglasses indoors, in an attempt to hide them
-       Missing too many days from work or school
-       Shows very low self-esteem
-       Personality change or not acting like themselves
-       Self-blaming for most everything that happens wrong at school or work; this feeling comes from their abusive home where they are accused of instigating the violence
-       Children of domestic violent homes, act out the violence in school, by becoming a class bully
