Indian Beach, NC February 29, 2008. International Women’s Day was first launched in 1911 in Copenhagen, Germany. This observance has spread throughout the world and focuses on women’s oppression and inequality that still takes place to this day. International Women’s Day is known to have changed women’s rights to work, vote, hold political office and end discrimination. Thanks to this women’s movement, the “Triangle Fire” that took place on March 25, 1911 in New York City, the labor legislation in the U.S.A. has changed to protect not just women but all labor workers. This disastrous factory fire in 1911 killed 140 working women. Most of these women were Jewish and Italian immigrants. The observance of this day also was utilized by European women while trying to end World War I. Many rallies and campaigns were run by groups of women to show their solidarity against the war. These and many other events that have been taking place around the world are initiated using the International Women’s Day as the time to show the power and unity of women worldwide.

“We want to take advantage of this commemorative date, to highlight what I call, the epidemic of violence against women in this country”, says Martha Z. Martinez, Co-Owner of WomenOnGuard.com. She states, “Too many women are sexually assaulted or battered so often, that the crime has become an everyday, or I should rephrase, an every 2 minute occurrence in this country”. She mentions that women should take their personal safety into their own hands. She goes on to say, “Many women are biologically physically weaker than men, so they need to carry a self-defense product for protection”.

One of the most important characteristics about the WomenOnGuard.com website is that it sells only non-lethal products. Susan Eaton, Co-Owner of the website, mentions; “we don’t want to add to crime, we want to prevent it and by using non-lethal means, we avoid having casualties in our society.” This 2 women owned website differs from others because they market their products toward women and discourage arming women with deadly weapons. They offer hotlines, safety tips and donate products to women’s crisis centers around the nation on a monthly basis.

WomenOnGuard.com sells non-lethal, self-defense products such as pepper spray, Mace, stun guns, Taser C2, personal alarms and home protection products.
