Nicole Kidman speaks out: "Say NO to Violence against women"

Nicolle Kidman has been a Goodwill Ambassador for UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) for over 2 years now. She is the spokesman for the "Say NO to Violence against women" a global internet campaign initiated by UNIFEM. This particular campaign fund is to help women around the world by strategically investing in areas that make women safer and prevent gender-based violence. "The Say NO campaign provides people all over the world with an opportunity to add their names to an ever-growing movement of people demanding that ending violence against women be made a top priority for governments around the world," stated Nicolle Kidman.

You can show your support by posting your signature on the campaign's website: www.saynotoviolence.org. The UN Foundation issued a challenge grant that it would donate $1 to each of the first 100,000 signatures posted on the "Say NO to Violence against women" internet site. Mr. Tim Wirth, President of the UN Foundation, followed up on his challenge recently and presented to UNIFEM a $100,000 check contribution to the Trust Fund. The UNIFEM's Say NO internet campaign will continue thru November 25, 2008, which is the globally recognized date to end violence against women.

Sexual Assaults While Working for KBR Inc.

You might ask; who is KBR Inc.? They are the largest contractor for the United States Army and one of the top 10 contractors for the U.S. Department of Defense. KBR is the world's largest defense services provider. They tackle engineering, construction and many types of services including energy, petrochemicals government and civil infrastructure services. This is a huge public company that employs over 50,000 workers!

Lately KBR has been in the news not for what they provide but for what they lack. Several women that work for KBR have claimed to have been sexually assaulted by other employees that work for KBR. The company avoids any sexual violence claims made by women. Their lack of concern for these incidents has lead women to appear before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on prosecuting crimes this month. Some women informed the Committee that they were discouraged from reporting the rapes and were pressured to sign inaccurate statements with inaccurate details by their employers. One particular woman who worked as a paramedic in a military camp for KBR said that several days after she was assaulted, she had to provide medical care to one of her attackers. She waited to report the rape after she was transferred to another camp because she feared for her safety! It appears that this problem is becoming common among female employees of KBR and also among female military soldiers. One recent case in point is the North Carolina murder and mishandled case of the pregnant soldier Maria Lauterbach, late last year at Camp Lejeune.

Most disturbing, especially with the rape cases of the female soldiers, is that these women are not only doing their jobs, but they are serving our country. These women don't just have the enemy abroad to fight against, but their own fellow male soldiers to fight against as well. They have to fear for their safety twice as much as the men when serving in the army, navy or marines and yet get little, if any, protection from these government entities. If there is any reason for American women to unite or protest for an injustice, this is it! If women in America can't even trust their government to protect them, then who can they trust?

One thing must definitely change: our government should require ALL companies they hire including KBR to make sure ALL of it's employees are safe. Not only safe from job related hazards, but also safe from each other. And if these companies don't comply, they must be penalized and the victims or family members of victims should be compensated. After all, the responsibility of any of these occurrences falls in the hands of whoever does the hiring!

Man abuses daughter for almost 24 years and fathers her 7 children

This 73 year old Austrian man kept his daughter, Elisabeth Fritzi, in his cellar for almost 24 years. His wife claims she was not aware of her daughter being in the house. Josef Fritzi, the father, would tell people that his 18 year old daughter had joined a cult and left home. Three of the children were never let out of the basement, one child died and the other 3 were raised upstairs by the grandparents which they claimed as adopted. The oldest of the three, 19 year old Kerstin, who was raised by her grandparents, was taken to the hospital due to severe cramps. One of the doctors from the hospital became suspicious and that lead to police finding her mother. When police found Elisabeth, she told authorities about her horrific ordeal.

What's the most important thing in your purse?

Need you ask? No, it isn't your makeup or your hair brush... It should be your self defense product!
Purses are handy and have been around for ages. If women ever have the advantage over men, it is the fact that they can fashionably carry a purse and not look like they are hiding something. You can hide things in purses that you could never get away with hiding in pants pockets, shorts or shirts... Put your purse to good use and hide your pepper spray, stun gun, personal alarm or even your Taser in it. One good thing about us gals is that criminals think we only carry makeup and keys in our purses. Well, let's prove them wrong and have them regret believing we are so vulnerable! Although many personal defense products are very small these days and would fit in a pocket, the purse is an accessory most of us carry any way, so why not conceal a product that may very well save our lives.

Short History on Pepper Spray

The use of pepper as a weapon goes all the way back to ancient China. The Chinese would put red chili pepper on rice paper as a weapon and swing it to the face of their opponents. The Japanese ninja were also known to use ground pepper against their enemies. During the Tukagawa Empire in Japan, the police would use a box called; metsubishi, which was filled with pepper and blown into a prisoner's eyes as a way of torture. Tear gas was invented in Germany in the 1800's and it is included in some Mace brand pepper sprays today.

The US introduced pepper spray through the US Postal Service in the 1980's as a dog repellent. Our government also used it for protection against bears and other animals. The FBI endorsed it as an "official chemical agent" in 1987 and by 1991, there were over 3,000 law enforcement agencies that utilized it.

As you can tell, even though pepper spray is a simple product, it really does a great job in deterring violent individuals or animals!

Sexual Assault Awareness Month in College

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), has encouraged many women organizations and crime associations to inform the public of the sexual assault epidemic this country has. You hear about rape issues women have abroad, but somehow it is not considered drastic enough in the US, to announce it nationally.

One particular group called The Campus Advocacy Network in UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago), points out that rapes on campus have a particular pattern that students need to be aware of. First of all, there is a spike in the occurrence of rape in the beginning of the school year (August, September and October). There is also a national pattern that shows May as a month when rapes start to climb and the crime peaks in July and August. By September and October sexual assaults starts to slow down, according to the FBI Department of Justice 2006. It has also been noticed that the freshman women population of a college are more likely to be raped during those first few months of the starting year. Another disturbing statistic is that college women that get raped around final exams, tend not to declare they were raped. This is probably do to the pressures of taking tests, where they push this traumatic experience to the 'back-burner' in order to avoid having their lives completely uprooted. It is traumatic enough to have been raped... This also applies to working women. It has been noted that women who have been under a lot of professional pressure, also put this incident aside.

Advice for Runners, Walkers and Hikers

Everyone knows that exercise is good for you. The most enjoyable form of exercise, I think, is done outdoors surrounded by nature. For those of you who venture out and breath the fresh air, a word of caution: make sure you practice safety habits and also carry a self defense product!

Be aware of your surroundings and listen to any out of the ordinary sounds. Yes this means, don't put head phones on and expect to know if someone is following you! I know music makes it easier to keep a pace, but if you must listen to music, please make sure that you turn the volume down. Stay alert and try not to daydream. Enjoy the "now" of your routine, the scenery, the energizing feeling your body gets. If you can, take a buddy with you, human or pet. Make it a point to schedule your routine at different times of the day. This is a good practice because most attackers study their victims in advance and know their patterns. So, keeping a varied schedule is safer! If you have the ability to do your exercise in the afternoon or mornings, this is even better. If your exercise routine is hiking, the same advice applies. While hiking, you have to be especially careful of the surrounding trees, bushes, rocks, hills, etc. They make good hiding places for attackers!

Another important factor that runners, walkers and hikers must consider is the possibility of having to defend themselves against an attacker. Now, I know some of you might say that this will never happen to you or that you are strong enough to take care of yourself. But there is always the possibility of things not going in your favor, and other factors that you wouldn't have anticipated. It is better to be prepared for any situation. When you walk or run, you could unfortunately be assaulted by a stranger or a dog! If you hike, again you could be attacked by not only a human but you could be attacked by a bear! I guess it depends on where you hike! For all of these situations there is a self-defense product you can carry that will help prevent such attacks.

If you are near civilization you should carry a product such as pepper spray or mace. There are many types and sizes of pepper spray you can choose from on our website, WomenOnGuard.com. If you know that you are at a higher risk of being attacked by a dog, you can carry the Mace® brand Muzzle pepper spray. There is even a product that repels dogs using an ultrasonic sound wave; The Ultrasonic Dog Chaser. If you hike where bears might be present, you can carry Bear Spray by Mace.

Of course there are other products that you can carry depending on how comfortable you feel using them. There are stun gun and taser options as well as personal alarm options, all of which you can find on our website. Either way, it is better to carry something for self-defense than nothing at all!

Fugitive Marine is finally caught!

Remember the Marine that fled to Mexico after a woman and her unborn child were found dead in his backyard? Well, authorities found him walking down a street in Mexico. Authorities in Mexico saw him, by chance, while executing an anti-kidnapping operation! They stopped him for questioning and found it odd that he did not speak Spanish very well. This was suspicious, so they checked into it a little deeper and realized that he was wanted by US authorities.

Cesar Laurean is being held in custody and is facing murder charges for the death of fellow Marine, Maria Lauterbach and her unborn child. It's not clear when he will be returned to North Carolina to face the charges.

Buying Pepper Spray? Consider the Mace Pepper Spray Gun.

It's not just another pepper spray, it is a powerful self-defense weapon. I'm sure you know all about the advantages of using pepper spray and what it can do to an assailant, so I will focus on just the outstanding qualities this particular Mace product has.

There are several advantages to carrying this item. The most important feature about this pepper spray gun is the distance it reaches. Your target can be 25 feet away and you can still reach them and render them powerless! Another feature is its unique blast. It is like an aerosol, not a stream. AND, unlike an aerosol, it can also be shot upside down or at any angle. There is also another convenient feature the Mace Pepper Spray Gun has; a trigger activated LED light. This light helps with your aim while disorienting the assailant!

The Mace Pepper Spray Gun comes in 4 colors; Blue, Silver, Blue/Black and Pink. The Mace Pepper Spray Gun comes packaged with 1, 28-gram OC cartridge, which contains 7 blasts and a water filled practice cartridge. Batteries are also included, which power the LED light. Replaceable OC cartridges and Water filled practice cartridges are sold separately.
