Georgia Trailer Park Murders

Early Saturday, a man in Georgia called 911 about a mass killing. Police showed up at the scene and discovered 7 people dead and 2 in critical condition. The man who called, Guy Heinze Jr., 22, is not considered a suspect although he is under arrest on drug and other charges. Police have reason to believe that Heinze has given them false statements. Guy Heinze is also a relative to one of the victims. The murders where committed in a trailer park called New Hope in a town just north of Brunswick, GA and police believe that the murderer is still on the loose.
One of the critically injured victims in the trailer park died on Sunday, raising the total number of dead to eight. Autopsies of the first 7 dead victims were started on Sunday. The county's coroner's office director mentioned that the crime scene was brutal and that he had never seen a case like this in his 17 years at the coroner's office. Georgia police are not giving much information out to the public, but they did mention that the age range of the victims was from a young age to a very old age. They also stated that there was no evidence of it being a murder-suicide case, since none of the victims were suspected of being involved in the murders. Georgia authorities are warning the New Hope trailer park residents to be cautious of their surroundings. Twenty detectives have been assigned to the case and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is also involved.

Detroit Man Kills People for Money

Vincent Smothers, 28, will be going to trial soon for being a hit man in Detroit. He confessed to police: "I don't have a profession", "I kill people for money." Detroit Police caught him in a suburban alley and heard his confession of several killings in Detroit. According to the authorities, it is very rare for someone to be charged with so many death crimes.

Smothers, the killer, informed police that the killings for him were easy and that he would shoot people while talking on his cell phone. He claimed that all but one of his victims were drug dealers. He provided police with very detailed accounts on the various shootings. The one crime victim he actually felt remorse about was Rose Cobb, a police officer's wife, who he felt was innocent. According to Smothers, her husband, David Cobb, who was having an affair at the time, hired him in December 2007 to murder his wife. That Detroit officer hung himself the following September. Smothers claimed he stopped his killings after that. He mentioned: "My stomach was in knots..." and that he couldn't kill people anymore after that.

"I knew at the time these crimes were committed they were wrong and that there would be a price to pay," he wrote. "After Cobb's wife, I could no longer have anything to do with murdering people."

"I can't bring them back," Smothers wrote, "but I hope this allows their families to know that someone is going to pay who was behind what happened to their loved ones."

His very lengthy confessions gave judges probable cause to put Vincent Smothers on trial. Trial date has not yet been announced.

The victim, Trisha Leffler said she was attacked by him and later tied up. She also informed the police that he afterwards took her money and also a pair of her underwear that was left on the floor.

On a recent family visit, Markoff told his brother "forget about [him]" and that "there's more coming out,".

Craigslist murder suspect Philip Markoff

Philip Markoff, 22, is being held without bail on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and murder. He is a 2nd year medical student at Boston University.

The murdered victim was Julissa Brisman who had placed an ad on Craigslist for massage services. Brisman and Markoff had exchanged emails and cell phone calls to set up an appointment to meet at a hotel. Brisman, the victim, was bashed in the head and shot with a bullet through her heart. The email exchange is what fortunately helped police officials track him down. Markoff is also charged with tying up and robbing another female victim on April 10th, who had placed an ad in Craigslist for massage services. Police found duct tape, restraints and a semiautomatic weapon in Markoff's home. They commented on the fact that this evidence was "critical and powerful". They also mentioned that there might be other victims.

Many of Markoff's friends and family members commented on the fact that he was very friendly, and smart. The media interviewed people who described Markoff as carrying himself well, he was clean cut and good looking.

Ted Bundy was good looking and smart as well... We all know that appearances can be deceiving and this is yet another case in which it holds true. Philip Markoff has not been declared guilty yet of murder, but if he is guilty or not, people should never make an assumption of a person's intentions solely on their appearance or intelligence. This should be an eye opener for everyone, especially for women, who become victims of violent crime in epidemic proportions.

Sexual Assaults While Working for KBR Inc.

You might ask; who is KBR Inc.? They are the largest contractor for the United States Army and one of the top 10 contractors for the U.S. Department of Defense. KBR is the world's largest defense services provider. They tackle engineering, construction and many types of services including energy, petrochemicals government and civil infrastructure services. This is a huge public company that employs over 50,000 workers!

Lately KBR has been in the news not for what they provide but for what they lack. Several women that work for KBR have claimed to have been sexually assaulted by other employees that work for KBR. The company avoids any sexual violence claims made by women. Their lack of concern for these incidents has lead women to appear before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on prosecuting crimes this month. Some women informed the Committee that they were discouraged from reporting the rapes and were pressured to sign inaccurate statements with inaccurate details by their employers. One particular woman who worked as a paramedic in a military camp for KBR said that several days after she was assaulted, she had to provide medical care to one of her attackers. She waited to report the rape after she was transferred to another camp because she feared for her safety! It appears that this problem is becoming common among female employees of KBR and also among female military soldiers. One recent case in point is the North Carolina murder and mishandled case of the pregnant soldier Maria Lauterbach, late last year at Camp Lejeune.

Most disturbing, especially with the rape cases of the female soldiers, is that these women are not only doing their jobs, but they are serving our country. These women don't just have the enemy abroad to fight against, but their own fellow male soldiers to fight against as well. They have to fear for their safety twice as much as the men when serving in the army, navy or marines and yet get little, if any, protection from these government entities. If there is any reason for American women to unite or protest for an injustice, this is it! If women in America can't even trust their government to protect them, then who can they trust?

One thing must definitely change: our government should require ALL companies they hire including KBR to make sure ALL of it's employees are safe. Not only safe from job related hazards, but also safe from each other. And if these companies don't comply, they must be penalized and the victims or family members of victims should be compensated. After all, the responsibility of any of these occurrences falls in the hands of whoever does the hiring!
