Rapes In Our Country Are Not Covered Enough By Media

It's one of the most horrible crimes that mostly women endure in our country. Some never live to talk about it… Some, don't want to mention it and others pretend that it didn't happen and are in denial but subconsciously bear and suffer from it.

95% Of college women, never inform authorities when they are raped, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice.
95% Of college women, never inform authorities when they are raped, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice.
Yet, you rarely hear about it in the news. In fact according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice, in 2013, 89,000 rapes occurred in our country. These rapes were the ones informed to authorities. But, most of the time, 60% of these crimes is never reported to authorities. The percentage of non reporting is even higher for college women, 95% of those cases are never reported. Plus, the majority of rapes in our country are committed by a friend or acquaintance. This explains the reason for not informing authorities in most cases.

It is a mistake for our society's media, to hide or ignore the U.S. Bureau of Justice's rape problem in our country. Especially when young, college age women, are the ones most raped. The media has not taken enough responsibility regarding this issue in our country, yet they have Americans look into rapes occurring in other countries, such as Arabia.

Talking and sending help abroad won't help our country's young women in general or college aged ones. It won't inform them on the precautions necessary to prevent this horrible crime. Not mentioning rapes in newscasts media, instills a false sense of security to the public. Especially when it comes to our young women and their perception that it mostly happens abroad.

Protect Yourself with Tear Gas Pepper Spray

Self defense, pepper spray with tear gas, UV dye and glow in the dark safety cap
Cops use pepper spray. Ancient Chinese soldiers used it too. It's one of the oldest weapons around and it's been improved!

Mace makes a defense item called the Triple Acton Leather Plus Model. Not only does it contain pepper spray, but it also has tear gas, an invisible UV dye for marking an attacker, plus a glow in the dark locking safety cap. This simple crime deterrent has come a long way... It's a small weapon, yet effective in deterring criminals and very affordable.

Who would have known that this Mace, simple little leather like self defense pouch, would be so powerful against crime and also contain tear gas? But it does and it can shoot 10 feet away! The weapon contains 5 one-second bursts. It's convenient to carry for self defense when attached to your keys. Take it out of your purse, backpack or briefcase, ahead of time, when you are not sure that your surroundings are safe. This eliminates an extra step you would have to take if an attacker tries to assault you! It helps to always be aware of your surroundings to prevent crime, as well.

It's no surprise that pepper spray has been around for centuries and has passed the test of time for self defense. Plus, the tear gas, makes this Mace Triple Action defense spray even more effective against criminals!

Looking Forward to Partying this Holiday Season?

December is no doubt, party month and most people are buying new clothes for the festivities, along with toys, alcohol and food!

Everyone is focusing on having a good time and gathering with family and friends. The last thing on someone's mind is safety. But safety is crucial, if you want to really enjoy the Holidays. Nothing can be worse during the Holidays than having your gifts at home burglarized, your shopping money pick pocketed at the mall, your party turning into drunks fighting or even worse, someone getting date raped… These occurrences aren't unique and happen year round!

The Holiday season is not immune to your everyday crime. In fact, sometimes crime is escalated. Make sure you celebrate with safety guidelines, like not drinking too much, not leaving a party with a stranger, no matter how friendly and attractive they are. Always have a designated driver when you leave and please beware of drugs! Never drink out of a punch bowl or open container. Always open your own drink. Request that your friend or waiter bring it unopened!

When out shopping for gifts, make sure you carry your money or credit cards where pick-pockets cannot steal it. Find unique ways to carry your cash or credit cards. While in store parking lots, request an escort if possible. Especially if it is dark out!

One more thing, consider our WomenOnGuard.com website for products that protect your home and yourself from crime. Self defense products also make great, thoughtful and unique gifts that will be appreciated by family and friends.

We hope you have a wonderful and safe Holiday Season!

How Safe is Your Child from Pedophiles?

Fort Lauderdale Police Dept.
Everyone is still talking about the Sandusky case, as more people are held accountable in court, for the on-going crimes they kept secret. But, have parents talked to their children, regarding pedophiles?

Have you as a parent, talked to your children about possible pedophile teachers or coaches in their school? Have you asked them if they have seen any unusual activity or behavior similar to Sandusky's actions? Are any of your kids in the Boy or Girl Scouts? When your child visits the home of their friends, have they seen their friend's parents act inappropriately? When visiting relatives, have you even thought to mention if an uncle or an aunt touched them in a strange way?

Sometimes you have to pull teeth before your children tell you what they have seen or worst what they have experienced, outside your home. You might think that all these questions about pedophiles, might be too much or scare your kids. Not so. You might be surprised at what they know… Plus, it's better if they are aware, than for them to be victims of such a crime. Tell them that those types of secrets are to be shared with you. Make sure they understand that you are concerned and want them to inform you of ANYTHING they might find strange or inappropriate.

One last thing… Educate yourself as a parent, about your surroundings as well. Go to your local police website and check out where the pedophiles AND sexual predators live in your neighborhood. Such websites give out names, types of crime, addresses and even photos of these criminals. Make your children aware and to stay away from them, if the criminals live within walking or biking distance from your home. Do this for your children's safety and yours, as well!

List of Ways to Rape Women Found in Miami University

A flyer was found in the men's bathroom at Miami University in Ohio, with a title that read, "The Top 10 Ways To Get Away With Rape". Actually offering tips to readers on how to commit a crime against female students.

The fact that someone or some group decided to place a flyer at Miami University, explaining how to rape females, is one of the most disturbing crime news we've ever come across. This piece of paper actually had instructions on how to go about committing the crime, such as; how to climb into windows, slit a victim's throat, focusing on women walking by themselves, etc. As it stands, women get raped more in university campuses, compared to women in general society today!

The officials at Miami University, called for a mandatory meeting for all their male students to attend and started an investigation on this rape instructions flyer. We suspect that if caught, he or them will just say it was a practical joke...

In this country rape is a very serious matter for women and definitely not a joke. Let's just hope that Miami University, gets to the bottom of this!

How Serious of a Rape Problem do We Have in the USA?

It's a very serious problem. To prove it we have some statistics for you that we find very discouraging... Fortunately, women can improve these statistics.

Women, especially young ones, think that they will never be a victim of sexual assault. Maybe because they haven't lived long enough to see the stream of rape reports or met anyone who has mentioned that they've been raped. The stigma, is so bad, that many of these crimes go unreported, as well!
We are here to tell you that, just as you fasten your seat belt when you get in a car, you should also fasten or carry a self defense weapon such as pepper spray with you at all times. With the exception of when you are at home, of course. Some might say this is very extreme... But statistics don't lie and the statistics are showing that women are more likely to be raped than the chances of an automobile accident to occur in our country. That's because this life threatening crime can occur in schools or universities, at work, parking lots, stairways, parks, alleys... The place or circumstances are endless. Perhaps you might say that men can also be victims of this, but unfortunately, women are the majority of the victims. What do car seat belts and self defense pepper spray weapons have in common? Well, they both may save lives. In fact, we looked up the statistics and this is what we found for the year 2009. Mind you, not all of these crimes are reported!

2009 U.S.A Statistics
Car Accidents:     10,800,000 (source: United States Census Bureau)
Sexual Assaults:  29,300,000 (source: Wikipedia)

Basically there were almost 3 times more rape crimes in this country than there were car accidents in 2009! The number of sexual assaults in our country placed us in 8th place, in the entire world.

So carry a pepper spray weapon ladies, and buckle up in self defense, as well as in your automobile! It's up to you, to change the statistics and not become a victim!

Safety Tips for Women Who Live in Apartments

As you know, at Women On Guard™, we try to help women prevent crime. Below you will see some common sense, simple self defense tips, that we all should practice when living in an apartment complex.

Apartments are like small neighborhoods, some people you know and some you don't... Plus some, you thought you knew! Remember to always be aware of your surroundings and keep the following safety tips in mind.

Getting Mail: Try getting your mail during the day. If you happen to work into the night, just get the mail in the morning. A couple of hours later, is no big deal... Take all your mail and sort it out at home. Don't start reading through it, while still next to the mail boxes. You can always return any envelope that wasn't yours!

Doing Laundry: If you don't have a washer or dryer, be very cautious when in the laundry area. Make a conscientious effort to see who is around you. If anybody looks shady, go back home. Remember, washing machines in laundry rooms are always noisy. Makes a good environment for crime, because the sound of the machines, can cover up a cry for help!

Going Swimming: Unless you are accompanied, never go alone to the pool at night. Try to apply safety measures by taking someone with you! Again, this is a perfect area for crime, because an attacker could be drowning you and all neighbors would hear, was water splashing.

Club House: Another section of the complex where you need to think about these safety tips. Many times apartment dwellers go there at night to socialize, have a couple of drinks or watch a game on TV. Alcohol sometimes leads to aggression or violence, so beware! It's preferable, not to go alone.

Trash Dumpster: A corner of the complex that people mostly go to at night. Make sure that the place is well lit. If not, you should get a few neighbors together and request as a group, to the management, for better lighting! Be aware of your surroundings before approaching the area. If you have a dog, take him or her with you. It can actually be the last walk of the evening for your pet to relieve themselves and they can be a companion for self defense, as well!

These are all common sense safety tips. For more tips go here. Plus, as we like to mention, always carry a self defense weapon, and make it readily available!

Personal Safety for Your Daughter in College

Is your daughter or someone you know headed to college this fall? Besides getting good grades, it is very important that they stay safe. Just like in society, college campuses also have their share of crimes being committed.

Many students carry pepper spray on campus, but sometimes administration frowns upon this, so the most accepted defense weapon is a personal alarm. Colleges have security present, so if your daughter or son carries an alarm and sets it off, campus security would most likely hear it and act accordingly. We all hear about crime committed against students, specifically sexual crimes against women. This is not to say that boys or men aren't targets as well, but very few compared to women. You and her should keep in mind that women college students are 4 times more likely to be raped than other women in our society!

Personal Alarm with Flashing Light
Keep your daughter's safety in mind by selecting one of our Personal Alarms. Make sure she puts it in her back pack or purse and has it with her while on campus! Let her know that she should always take it out of her backpack and in her hands, when she is walking alone in college, especially when it is DARK OUT! It is one less step for her to take if she has to set the alarm off.

Our Personal Alarms come in many shapes and sizes. Some have flashlights, motion sensors and can even serve as door and window alarms, as well. Most are electronic but we also have one that is an aerosol and one that is an emergency whistle.

Encourage your daughter to have good grades, plus encourage her also to follow safety measures to prevent crime while on campus!

Temporary, because it will burn their eyes so bad, that they will have to slam them shut! It will also make them cough, choke and feel nauseous for up to 45 minutes. This one pounder, crime defense product, has so much of the hot solution that you would have enough to shoot at not just one but several business trespassers or home intruders! The Pepper Spray 18%, 1 lb. Pistol Grip also has a UV dye. This helps police identify the home intruders or business trespassers, if captured. PLUS it is certified by the same independent laboratory (Chromtec LLC) that is used by pepper spray manufacturers and the US government for over 40 years.

The pistol grip is convenient and built solid, with grooves to prevent it from slipping through your fingers. Plus it also helps with aiming! It has a safety clip to prevent from accidental spraying too.

So, next time you encounter dangerous crime, be prepared and protect yourself, your home or your business property with this non lethal weapon!

Safety Tips for Young Women

Yes, for young women, because us older ones already learned from our mistakes and should pass it on to our daughters, younger friends and relatives. If you consider yourself an "older gal", you might consider these safety tips to be just common sense. But what is common sense to you, might not be to young women who are now entering into our society and are inexperienced in the ways of this crime infested world. So keep this in mind and pass it on to any young woman you might come across or even to your own daughter!

Safety Tips for Preventing Crime
  • Avoid dark and empty places, like alleys.
  • Avoid walking alone at night, have someone you know accompany you.
  • Never drink from an opened container at bars or parties. Get your own drink and keep an eye on your drink.
  • Never accept a ride from a stranger. Your mom told you this and it holds true for preventing crime as an adult too.
  • Meet someone new? Introduce him to your friends. Mention his hair color or eyes, any features that can be remembered by your friends. This can be crucial information if a crime is committed.
  • No security system... but have a car? Keep your car alarm by your nightstand. If you hear something suspicious, let your car alarm double as a home alarm. The whole neighborhood will be listening! (First test your alarm from your bedroom, to make sure it reaches your car.)
  • Look around and inside your parked car, before entering it.
  • If you live in an apartment complex:  Check your mail in a well lit area or wait till in the morning to check it.  Take your trash out at night if the area is well lit or wait until the morning.  If you have a dog, take him or her with you for your nightly tasks. Good exercise for your pet too!
  • If you take public transportation, make friends with women that you usually see on a regular basis. This makes for a good buddy system.
  • Always take a self defense product with you when you are out and about!

Crimes Against Real Estate Agents in Ohio

It seems there is a trend in Ohio of crimes against real estate agents. Two real estate agents have been killed in just this last week alone.

It's no wonder with the housing market like it is and foreclosures left and right, all over the country, that many real estate agents are targeted by frustrated individuals. This crime scenario will probably increase if the housing market doesn't improve. Although real estate agents are personally not responsible for the housing market situation, they are being targeted and they should be aware of this danger.

It's been known in the past, how vulnerable real estate agents are when it comes to showing houses to strangers. All real estate agents should carry some sort of weapon to defend themselves against crime. Especially female real estate agents. A pepper spray, stun gun or even a taser should be required by real estate companies for their agents. To be a real estate agent is probably one of the most dangerous professions to be in. Consider their predicament: a stranger with them, an empty house or house they have never been in, showings during the day or night, strange neighborhoods, etc. To top it off, if the agent is female, that pretty much doubles the odds against her! Post office mail carriers carry pepper spray as a weapon to protect themselves against dogs. Why shouldn't real estate agents do the same?

If you know of a real estate agent or if one just helped you sell or buy a house, give them a pepper spray, stun gun or taser, besides or course their commission! They will really appreciate it.

Alabama University, Professor Amy Bishop, Has Priors

Universities are not only having shootings now from students, but also from professors too! It seems like professors as well as students will have to go through metal detectors now. What a shame...

By looking at Amy Bishop's photo, you would think she was a humble quiet woman and not the violent criminal that is being exposed. Initially news reports surfaced prior information about her killing her brother. That 1986 crime was declared by authorities as an accidental death. Now it has been discovered that she also was a suspect in a mail bombing threat against a Harvard Medical School professor in 1993. Looks can definitely be deceiving!

How could a person with 2 previous criminal suspicions become a professor at a university? A person that definitely should be a role model for our children, should have had a background check done before getting hired. Do universities give background checks to potential professors? Why was there not a red flag raised when her background was checked? Assuming it was checked, did they just ignore the results? I'm sure authorities will discover more clues in her past that lead her to commit this most recent horrible crime.

For more details read here.

PRESS RELEASE: Women On Guard™ Donates Pepper Spray to the YWCA of Greater Memphis in Tennessee.

WomenOnGuard.com donated pepper spray to the YWCA of Greater Memphis. The Tennessee association strives to create opportunities for women’s growth, leadership and power.

Pompano Beach, FL, November 9, 2009. WomenOnGuard.com, a website that sells non lethal, self defense products, continues to donate pepper spray to women’s crisis centers or similar causes, throughout the country. The YWCA of Greater Memphis is the 19th recipient to receive pepper spray from Women On Guard™, which started this donation process back in 2007. The women owned website sells self defense products such as Mace, pepper spray, stun guns, Tasers and personal alarms. It has safety tips, a blog and hotlines for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

Since May 23, 1919, the YWCA of Greater Memphis has been providing mission-driven programs in the Greater Memphis area. It is a women’s membership movement that is strengthened by diversity. The association draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women’s growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. The association will thrust its collective power toward the elimination of racism wherever it exists and by any means necessary.

Memphis, Tennessee is just like most cities in this country, where women are victims of violent crime, stated Susan Eaton, co-owner of Women On Guard™. Rape and domestic violence are occurring in epidemic proportions, not just in our country but abroad too. It seems like it is a never-ending problem, especially for women. It is no surprise that many women have chosen to take matters into their own hands and are starting to defend themselves, either through self defense classes or self defense products. Most women don’t want to add to crime statistics, so they choose a less lethal means to defend themselves against attackers.

Events such as the recent gang rape of the Richmond High School girl in California and the discovery of 11 female bodies found in Anthony Sowell’s home in Ohio, are perfect examples of what we need to change in our society. Women On Guard™ owners strive to empower women and men by arming them with self defense products that protect individuals from violent crimes at home, work or anywhere they might be.

6 Bodies Found at Ohio Rapist's Home

A previously convicted rapist that served 15 years in prison for raping a 21 year old woman back in 1989, was arrested again by Cleveland, Ohio police last Saturday. Anthony Sowell allegedly raped another woman last week. She informed police of the crime and that is what lead the authorities to his home. Two bodies were discovered at first in his home and later 4 other decomposing bodies were found. All 6 women were black, 5 had been strangled to death. The cause of death of the 6th woman has not been determined. Ohio police do not think that they will find other bodies, but a cadaver dog will be taken to the house to search further.

This crime in Cleveland is yet another example of the fact that rapists are repeat offenders and that their prison sentences should be extended considerably for their crimes. Anthony Sowell was a registered sex offender and was required to check in regularly at the Sheriff's office. He followed the rules given to him for his crime, yet still managed to rape women. He is now, not just a rapist, but a serial killer. This proves that the system does not work and needs to be drastically revamped. As it stands now, there are an awful lot of rapists that are loose, comply with their sheriff's office, and still rape and even kill women throughout our neighborhoods.

UPDATE:
Other bodies have been found at Sowell’s home. This brings the total number of bodies to 11.

Neighborhood Watch Groups Now Twitter, Blog and Email!

Neighborhoods across America are taking advantage and using our technology to prevent crime.
Some communities are downsizing their police force due to the economy and neighborhoods are responding by forming more neighborhood watch groups. In fact, the National Sheriff's Association office shows an increase of neighborhood watch groups across the US. In 2005 there were 5,000 registered neighborhood watch groups compared to 20,000 groups in 2009!

These watch groups are high tech now. Twittering, emailing and text messaging are a fast communication tool that really keeps all the members in the watch group in touch with what is going on in their neighborhoods. Members of these groups tweet a constant stream of crime alerts to a privacy-protected Twitter address. Others blog about certain activities that are suspicious and warn their neighbors. Sometimes they text message to all neighbors and request for everyone to call the police about a suspicious crime activity. According to groups, the more calls the police get, the quicker they respond.

Most city police officials offer training to these neighborhood watch groups. They explain how to identify suspicious behavior and how to respond to it. They also warn block watch members who aren't trained by police that they should be cautious of overstepping legal boundaries, such as peeking through people's windows, etc.

WOW, who would of thought that all these Twitters and text messages were going to actually keep us safer in the future?
