Mace Security International SAFETY TIPS

We thought it would be a good idea, to share some information from one of the most used brands in the world for self defense, Mace.

Criminals rarely put real thought into assault and other crimes. Almost never is their violence "person specific." They are looking for vulnerability, an "easy mark," someone who is not aware of their surroundings. A well rehearsed plan of action can take you and your family off the target list.

HOME SAFETY TIPS
Constant awareness of your environment is the best weapon for guarding your personal safety

  • A constant awareness of your environment is the best weapon for guarding your personal safety. Always be alert to your surroundings, whether in your car, on the street or at home.
  • Always have a plan of action. Play a mental game of "what if…", where you would go and what you would do, should a dangerous situation occur.
  • Trust your instincts. Research shows that a large percentage of people who have been assaulted, had a feeling something was wrong just before they were attacked.
  • Over half of all assaults are committed by someone known to the victim. Take notice if an acquaintance is paying unwanted attention to you.
  • Don't wear headphones for radios or other devices that would make it difficult for you to hear an attacker. Be alert at all times.
  • If someone accosts you, yell "Fire" instead of "Help" or "Rape," because more people are likely to respond.
  • Be sure to shout that you do not know the assailant, so bystanders do not mistake the encounter for a domestic quarrel.

AUTO / TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS
Take a first aid kit whenever you take a car trip.

  • Keep your vehicle in good running order. Routine maintenance and replacement of worn parts in a timely manner will significantly decrease the possibility of breakdowns when you're not prepared.
  • Consider having a cellular phone in your vehicle. Often this is the quickest and safest means of alerting the police and emergency services that you are in need of assistance.
  • If your travel plans include an overnight or long-distance driving, make sure you leave an itinerary of your trip with friends or family, to let them know where you will be staying, including phone numbers of hotels, etc.
  • Plan road trips carefully. Consider weather and driving conditions in relation to the condition of your automobile. Carry maps and familiarize yourself with the route you will travel before you leave.
  • Have an emergency kit, including a working flashlight and jumper cables, in the car at all times. Take a first-aid kit and emergency blanket, too.
  • Often a "Send Help" or "Please Call Police" sign for your windshield can be a valuable item if you are not able to get your vehicle going.

CAMPUS SAFETY TIPS
Let your roommates know where you are going and how long you will take.
Photo by US Department of Education

  • Learn what help campus security can offer to increase your safety. If their services are only available in certain areas or if they do not patrol some portions of the campus at regular intervals, learn where those areas are.
  • Most campuses have excellent provisions for lighting the most traveled paths after dark. Stick to these.
  • Often the security for each dormitory is lax, if it exists at all. Make sure that you keep your room locked at all times.
  • Consider registering your more valuable items with the campus security, to make identification easy.
  • Let a roommate or a friend know where you are going and how long you may be gone, when you leave campus.
  • Always enlist the company of at least one other person when jogging or exercising outside.
  • Do not wear headphones as they can seriously impair your ability to predict and avoid a confrontation.

Of course, we would also want to mention, that it's important for you to carry a self defense product when you are at home, traveling, on campus or in any other place you might need some protection! We carry the Mace brand, along with a few other self defense brands, as well.

Tips for Preventing Burglars, During the Holidays

If you're planning to leave your home for a holiday vacation, please keep in mind that there are a few things you might need to do before you go!

Your home's security is important and you should carefully plan ahead of time to keep it safe. Below is a list of tips you might want to consider, before you can relax and enjoy your much needed vacation.

Security Tips to Prevent Burglars
  • The best plan is to get a house sitter, have a relative or friend stay in the house with your pets. This will prove that the house is not empty.
  • If you can't find someone to take care of your home, make your house look busy by having lights turn off and on at night. Consider buying a Digital Timer for security.
  • Try to get a relative or neighbor to get your mail and water the plants during your holiday vacation. Houses or apartments that have newspapers and mail piled up or plants dying, look uninhabited. You can also request to have your postal service stopped temporarily, while you are away.
  • If you rent your home, tell your landlord that you are not going to be home. This is important, in case they need to get into the residence for an emergency and they can't contact you.
  • Keep your heater running if you live in a cold area. Just enough warmth to prevent your water from freezing in your pipes and possibly bursting!
  • Finally let your close neighbors be aware that your are going away for the holidays and to keep an eye on your home.
Remember that burglars also have a good time during this season! Following the above tips and proper planning, you should be able to take off on your holiday vacation, with no concerns.

Brisk Walking Exercise Safety Tips

Lets face it, many of us women aren't very athletic and can't run marathons, so the next best thing is to walk as fast as we can and try not to hurt anything!

But the focus of this post it not to train women for posture or how to pace themselves, but rather to offer basic safety tips during their fresh air escapades. This is assuming the weather allows it and you dress appropriately.

OK, the first of our tips is the music one. Yes, us women do enjoy music while we walk briskly but it can also make you less aware of your surroundings and that can be a problem! If you must listen to it, lower the volume. Better to listen to perhaps a talk show, interview, the news… Something that doesn't completely fade out the noises in your environment. The best thing of course is not to place anything in your ears and listen to the birds or cars, you get the idea! Another of the safety tips is to change your routine. If you can go walking at different times of the day, do it! Be less predictable about the time of day you exercise. This will deter a predator from targeting you. Also try not to take the same path, take alternate or random routs each day. Explore around, its not like you are on a race track, going around in circles… Enjoy your exercise walks by looking at different scenery. Also, if you have a walking buddy such as a friend or a pet, that is even better!

Use common sense when walking briskly, especially if your neighborhood doesn't have side walks. If you must walk on the side of the street, go against your instinct and walk toward traffic! This way, you can dodge any car that is coming at you and no vehicle will sneak from behind you. Let's admit, there are bad drivers, texting going on and people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Don't worry, after following this particular tip for a few days, you will wonder, why you didn't do this before!

Ok, these are the common sense, basic safety walking tips. We didn't want you women to read a thesis! Now go out and exercise and please, don't forget to carry a self defense item in your escapades...

Safety Tips for Women Who Live in Apartments

As you know, at Women On Guard™, we try to help women prevent crime. Below you will see some common sense, simple self defense tips, that we all should practice when living in an apartment complex.

Apartments are like small neighborhoods, some people you know and some you don't... Plus some, you thought you knew! Remember to always be aware of your surroundings and keep the following safety tips in mind.

Getting Mail: Try getting your mail during the day. If you happen to work into the night, just get the mail in the morning. A couple of hours later, is no big deal... Take all your mail and sort it out at home. Don't start reading through it, while still next to the mail boxes. You can always return any envelope that wasn't yours!

Doing Laundry: If you don't have a washer or dryer, be very cautious when in the laundry area. Make a conscientious effort to see who is around you. If anybody looks shady, go back home. Remember, washing machines in laundry rooms are always noisy. Makes a good environment for crime, because the sound of the machines, can cover up a cry for help!

Going Swimming: Unless you are accompanied, never go alone to the pool at night. Try to apply safety measures by taking someone with you! Again, this is a perfect area for crime, because an attacker could be drowning you and all neighbors would hear, was water splashing.

Club House: Another section of the complex where you need to think about these safety tips. Many times apartment dwellers go there at night to socialize, have a couple of drinks or watch a game on TV. Alcohol sometimes leads to aggression or violence, so beware! It's preferable, not to go alone.

Trash Dumpster: A corner of the complex that people mostly go to at night. Make sure that the place is well lit. If not, you should get a few neighbors together and request as a group, to the management, for better lighting! Be aware of your surroundings before approaching the area. If you have a dog, take him or her with you. It can actually be the last walk of the evening for your pet to relieve themselves and they can be a companion for self defense, as well!

These are all common sense safety tips. For more tips go here. Plus, as we like to mention, always carry a self defense weapon, and make it readily available!

Memorial Day Safety for Women and Children

The weather is finally getting warmer and Memorial Day is next Monday, announcing that Summer is just around the corner. Many of you are planning barbecues, parties or nightclub dancing for the extended weekend! As usual, we at WomenOnGuard, have our concerns regarding your safety during the festivities. Below are safety tips to think about.

First of all, if you are a mother of a small child or simply taking children with you to a barbecue or party this Memorial Day, keep the following in mind. Don't let them out of your site, especially if you don't know who some people are. Second, never let a toddler eat a whole hot dog, please cut it into small pieces before giving it to them. Many small children die of suffocation each year, do to hot dogs getting stuck in their throats! Also keep them away from the hot grill! Third, if there is a swimming pool at the barbecue, please focus and be watchful of all the kids in it. The above are the most common ways children can get into life threatening situations, but there are many more...

Party gatherings or nightclubbing will be everywhere on Memorial Day weekend. Here is where women are most of the time, victims of predators. Remember that a predator can also be someone you already know! Date rape drugs, run rampant at nightclubs and parties. Join the smart women and know the ropes, on how to party with safety in mind! Never drink from an open container that you personally didn't see it opened in front of you. Never drink from punch bowls. When you order a snack or dinner, make sure you tell the server to bring the beverage unopened. Another important thing for women to remember is to always introduce a person you met to your friends. Point out some specific features about the person, besides their full name. For example, aren't his blue eyes beautiful? Or, isn't that tattoo interesting? Point out things to your friends that they will be able to remember. This is in case you disappear afterwards and police want descriptions! Last but not least, never drive off with someone you just met at a nightclub, ever!

In general, try to practice common sense... Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend and don't drink and drive!

With all the anticipation and hoopla, some people forget some common sense safety tips. Here's where WomenOnGuard, comes into the scene! Holiday and New Years Party Safety Tips
  • When drinking any beverage, always keep an eye on your drink
  • Never drink any kind of beverage from a punch bowl or open container
  • Never share a drink
  • If you order a drink from a waiter, request that it be in a closed container
  • Don't accept an open drink from anyone, unless you watched them pour it
  • Drugs used to spike drinks can be colorless and tasteless so you might not realize that anything has been added
  • Be aware of the behavior of your friends. Is their behavior out of character? Do they seem too "out of it" for what they've drank, leave the party immediately and don't go back
  • If you still want to be even more cautious, consider purchasing drink testing strips
  • When meeting a new person, make sure to introduce him or her to your friends. Point out some features to your friends about this new person, example: "Doesn't he have beautiful green eyes and check out his tattoo!" (important police info)
  • Never leave a party with someone you just met
  • Choose your designated driver before you go to a party with a group
  • If you're intoxicated, alone and leaving, have the host/bartender call a taxi
Please keep these safety tips in mind for the holidays and New Years, plus always take with you a self defense weapon!

Holiday Party Safety Tips

We all love to party during the Holidays and New Years! You can enjoy your parties even more if you take some precautions. Unfortunately where there are parties, there is alcohol. Where there is alcohol, there is sometimes violence. Violence  during the Holidays is common and prevention is key, in order to enjoy the season. Unfortunately, women more than men, are victims of rape or sexual assault crimes during the Holidays, at New Years Eve parties or in nightclubs for that matter. Please remember the following safety tips that may prevent sexual assaults or other crimes:

Party or Nightclub Safety Tips
  • Never share drinks.
  • Only accept drinks from closed containers.
  • Never pour a drink from a punch bowl or pitcher.
  • Get your own drink and watch the bartender pour it.
  • Always introduce a stranger you just met, to your friends at a party or nightclub.
  • Never accept to leave with a stranger or a person you just met.
  • If there is not a designated driver, call a taxi or stay at a nearby hotel.
Before you go to a party or any other event, always carry a self defense weapon, besides remembering the safety tips. This should not just apply to Holiday parties but to year-round errands, work, school, nightclubs, concerts, etc. Just like you wear a seat belt while driving, you need to carry a pepper spray, stun gun, taser, rape whistle or personal alarm, while you are out and about. ALWAYS be prepared to defend yourself. DON'T be a victim of sexual assault or any other crime.

Summer Safety Tips

Home Safety Tips
Many people take vacations in the summer. Houses or apartments are left alone and burglars see this as a chance to break in and steal. Make sure your home appears lived in by having your lights turn on and off during the evenings. Invest in a digital timer or have a trustworthy neighbor turn them on. Some people have a relative house sit their home. If you normally have the drapes or shades open, leave them that way. If you have a garage, make sure that it is locked. Have your mail held at the post office or again, have a neighbor get it for you. This also applies to newspaper deliveries. Let your local police station know you are going to be away. Many police stations have time for their officers to occasionally patrol your property. Don't leave a message on your answering machine that you are going to be out for a few days!

Pool or Beach Safety Tips
Always have an adult keep an eye on children while in a pool or at the beach. When at the beach, not only watching kids swimming is important, but also making sure you keep an eye on them while they are walking or running about. Many children get kidnapped on beaches. If you have a pool and a small child, you might also consider investing this summer in a pool alarm. It will detect when a substantial splash occurs. These alarms have a remote receiver that you can have inside your home. It will let you know, while your are inside, if someone or something goes in your pool.

Summer Cookouts
Many people know what precautions must be taken when you have an open fire or barbecue. One thing that has caught the attention lately by the medical field is the amount of deaths caused by children chocking on HOT DOGS! Please make sure that small children have their hot dogs cut up in small pieces. We know this is a given, but with all the fuss that goes into a family picnic, the obvious, sometimes goes unnoticed! Same applies to grapes, cherries, etc.

Self Defense Weapons Tips
Yes, these can also be an issue if you are not careful. First of all, never let a child under 18 carry a self defense product. Keep these products away from a child's reach. Second, make sure you never leave pepper spray or mace in a heated environment such as a hot summer car. Pepper spray inside it's canister can expand and burst open and cause a HOT mess! Third and lastly, keep in mind that if you are going to board a plane, you cannot carry pepper spray on board. If you are going to fly internationally, remember that in many countries, it is illegal to carry pepper spray, stun guns or Tasers!
