Respect for Women in the Military

Women as well as men, need to work for a living. In most careers, women have gotten the respect they well deserve for their hard work. OK, there are issues with women not getting equal compensation for the same jobs held by men... But lets put that aside for now and instead focus on one particular career for women that has proven to treat women with not only a lack of respect, but a career in which women are laughed at, bullied, raped and even killed by their fellow workers. A career in which women are outnumbered by co-workers who seem to think that they are beyond the law and can get away with murder if they want to. The career we are talking about is the Military Career. Whether women join the Air Force, Army, Navy or the Marines, it is common knowledge that they get treated by some of their fellow soldiers, as secondary citizens. Many female soldiers are victims of stalking, sexual assault or rape, and other hate crimes. More often than not, the military ignores these victims and looks the other way.

The Air Force, Army, Navy or the Marines, seem to think that their profession is exempt from treating women with respect. They forget that they represent our country and not a third world country where women are victimized and treated like animals. It is so against what our country stands for! Women must stand together and make sure that these crimes do not go unpunished. We need to make sure that the U.S. Military follows the same rules of conduct that Corporate, Manufacturing and Retail America does. American soldiers should abide by the law or face consequences. We ask that all American women, speak out against these crimes and make our government elected officials aware of our disapproval.

Your Best Self Defense? Don't Sit On It.

There is a new area of scientific study called "inactivity physiology" or commonly called "sitting disease". Us humans have evolved over millions of years to be on the go! Recently due to industrialization and high technology, we are literally killing ourselves by sitting too much on our butts. Our bodies were built to be erect and active. For thousands of generations the environment kept us constantly active. Women, in fact, are less active than men, simply because they tend to do less sports and have more sedentary jobs.

When you sit for extended periods of time, your body starts to shut down at a metabolic level. Your circulation slows down and you burn less calories. Also the less you move the less blood sugar you burn and the more likely you can get diabetes. Even your brain gets less circulation and those feel good hormones levels go down and blood pressure goes up. Sitting down too much also hurts your lower back, weakens your spine muscles and you are more prone to get heart disease because enzymes that keep blood fats in check, are less active. Even if you exercise regularly, if you sit more than you exercise, stand or walk around, you are metabolically too inactive.

So it boils down to this, try to stand up more often! The simple act of standing up, makes a world of difference and burns more calories. You become healthier, less depressed and have a sharper mind. Below is a few suggestions.
  • Take more breaks at work, get up and walk.
  • While on the phone, stand up and talk.
  • Stand at your desk instead of sitting.
  • Go to a coworker's desk instead of emailing them.
  • Use the stairway instead of the elevator.
  • Spend less time watching TV. Try to exercise, while watching TV or better yet, make out!
  • Do your own house cleaning, laundry, meals, instead of hiring someone, calling for takeout or getting fast food.
This information was summarized from an original article written by Selene Yeager, Women's Health.

Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

Not a year goes by when you don't hear in the news that someone was robbed or assaulted around the Holidays. Most of the time it happens in shopping center or mall parking lots! What you don't hear are suggestions on how to avoid these types of crime. Below are a few safety tips to keep in mind while you go shopping this Holiday season.

Shopping Safety Tips
  • Try to go shopping during daylight hours. If you have to shop at night, try taking a friend or relative with you.
  • If you go shopping at night or know it will be dark when your done shopping, try to park your car in a well lit area and not behind bushes or where your car is obstructed from plain site.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or restraining clothes. You should be comfortable while shopping and able to move quickly if need be.
  • Try not to use large amounts of cash, use credit cards or checks if possible.
  • Keep your money or credit card in your front pocket instead of a purse or wallet.
  • If you carry a wallet or purse, be very aware of possible pick-pockets.
  • Try not to do all your shopping on one trip, excessive amounts of shopping bags are very hard to manipulate and keep track of.
  • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason, even if it is to hand you a flyer. At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
  • If it gets dark outside when you are done shopping, try to get an escort or security guard from the store to walk you to your car. If this is not possible carry a self defense product with you and have it ready when you go toward your car.
Keep these safety tips in mind throughout the the whole year and not just while shopping this Holiday season.

Holiday Home Safety Tips

Many people go away for the Holidays, to find out that their home had been burglarized while they were gone. The Holiday season is a robber's favorite time of the year. Many homeowners are away and a robber knows this by observing their house. Read the following safety tips if you plan to leave your home for the Holidays.

Home Safety Tips
  • Never leave your house pitch dark, keep some lights on at night by purchasing digital timers that will turn on or off your lamps or TV. This makes it look like someone is home. Digital timers are programmable and can store up to 20 programs. Digital timers are also handy for exterior house lights or garden decoration.
  • If you have a home alarm, don't forget to turn it on before you leave.
  • If possible get a house sitter to keep an eye on your house and turn some lights on and off at night. They can also take care of your newspaper deliveries and mail. If you have a home alarm, show them how to work it.
  • If you can't get a house sitter, ask a dependable neighbor to get your mail or newspaper deliveries or have your post office or newspaper delivery paused until you get back.
These safety tips are good all year round, not just for the Holidays. Always keep your home safe!

Holiday Party Safety Tips

We are getting closer to that special time of the year when people get closer together and share their love and friendship with each other. This includes parties, dinners and an overall joyful experience for the most part. But what about the times when it isn't so joyful? What about the time when someone drinks too much or someone gets into an unwanted situation? Below you will find some handy tips to keep in mind so your Holiday can be safe and enjoyable.

Party Safety Tips
It's not a party if there is no drinking! Obviously the main rule to remember is to not drink and drive! But also keep in mind this Holiday that with all the hoopla, some people like to take advantage of others. A big concern, is someone putting something in your drink that can harm or impair your judgement or even worst, make you unconscious. Below are some safety tips to remember when you are at a party or nightclub.
  • Never get a drink from the punch bowl.
  • Accept drinks that are from other people, waitresses or waiters only if they are sealed or in closed containers.
  • If getting your drink from the bartender, keep an eye on him or her until they give you your drink.
  • While you are interacting with others, always keep an eye on your opened drink.
  • Have a designated sober driver picked from your group before you go out together for drinks.
  • If you are going to a party alone and consume alcohol, call a taxi cab or phone someone you know that is not drinking to take you home. You can also use public transportation or stay at a hotel close by overnight.
  • If you are walking home alone, avoid going through dark pathways and try to choose places where there are other people around. It's always good to carry a self defense weapon such as pepper spray or a stun gun.
Of course these safety tips are not only good during the Holidays, but all year round! Enjoy the season safely!

Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa Holiday Gifts

Now is the season most people ask themselves, what sort of presents or gifts they should buy for their family and friends. You want to buy something different to surprise your loved ones this Holiday. People get bored with the usual gifts such as clothes, candy, pens, etc. With the exception of children, who mostly just want toys for Christmas, most of us like to get something unique, yet useful.

Most people never consider buying self defense products as a stocking stuffer or Holiday gift. What better way to express your love for someone by giving them something that can protect their life? Particularly, non lethal, self defense products that will protect your loved ones. Non lethal, self defense products come in all shapes, sizes and prices. Below is a list of such self defense weapons by category, that can be purchased for Kwanzaa or Hanukkah or any other season of the year.

Pepper Spray
Probably one of the most popular products for personal defense in the world. Pepper spray can come in stream, spray, foam, gel and fog form. They can be in a simple metal canister, plastic container, leather soft case, or even as a gun shaped item. Some pepper spray is disguised to look like a lipstick container, perfume, pager, baton or even walking weights! Disguised pepper spray present an element of surprise against an attacker.

Personal Alarms
Personal alarms are a great attention getter when you are in danger. They have a very high pitched sound when activated and most have flashlights attached. Some even have a disable pin wrist strap. If someone tries to take it from you, the high pitched alarm will go off. This disable clip can also be used on doors and windows. Attaching it to these objects will alarm you if someone is trying to open a window or door into your home. Personal alarms are also used as medical or panic alarms. This self defense product requires batteries, which are usually included with the purchase.

Stun Devices
Stun devices are becoming more and more popular these days. These self defense weapons work by giving an attacker an electrical shock. The most common of these products are stun guns. But there are also stun batons, stun pens and cell phone stun guns. Recently the general public has also been able to purchase Tasers in addition to stun guns. A citizen air Taser comes in different models such as the Taser C2, X26c and M26c. Stun devices range between 200,000 volts and 3,000,000 volts. Many stun devices include flashlights and alarms. Some run on batteries and others are rechargeable.

Whether you want to give a simple small gift such as a pepper spray or a more elaborate present such as a Taser for Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, your gift will surely be appreciated!

PRESS RELEASE: Women On Guard™ Donates Pepper Spray to the YWCA of Greater Memphis in Tennessee.

WomenOnGuard.com donated pepper spray to the YWCA of Greater Memphis. The Tennessee association strives to create opportunities for women’s growth, leadership and power.

Pompano Beach, FL, November 9, 2009. WomenOnGuard.com, a website that sells non lethal, self defense products, continues to donate pepper spray to women’s crisis centers or similar causes, throughout the country. The YWCA of Greater Memphis is the 19th recipient to receive pepper spray from Women On Guard™, which started this donation process back in 2007. The women owned website sells self defense products such as Mace, pepper spray, stun guns, Tasers and personal alarms. It has safety tips, a blog and hotlines for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

Since May 23, 1919, the YWCA of Greater Memphis has been providing mission-driven programs in the Greater Memphis area. It is a women’s membership movement that is strengthened by diversity. The association draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women’s growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. The association will thrust its collective power toward the elimination of racism wherever it exists and by any means necessary.

Memphis, Tennessee is just like most cities in this country, where women are victims of violent crime, stated Susan Eaton, co-owner of Women On Guard™. Rape and domestic violence are occurring in epidemic proportions, not just in our country but abroad too. It seems like it is a never-ending problem, especially for women. It is no surprise that many women have chosen to take matters into their own hands and are starting to defend themselves, either through self defense classes or self defense products. Most women don’t want to add to crime statistics, so they choose a less lethal means to defend themselves against attackers.

Events such as the recent gang rape of the Richmond High School girl in California and the discovery of 11 female bodies found in Anthony Sowell’s home in Ohio, are perfect examples of what we need to change in our society. Women On Guard™ owners strive to empower women and men by arming them with self defense products that protect individuals from violent crimes at home, work or anywhere they might be.

6 Bodies Found at Ohio Rapist's Home

A previously convicted rapist that served 15 years in prison for raping a 21 year old woman back in 1989, was arrested again by Cleveland, Ohio police last Saturday. Anthony Sowell allegedly raped another woman last week. She informed police of the crime and that is what lead the authorities to his home. Two bodies were discovered at first in his home and later 4 other decomposing bodies were found. All 6 women were black, 5 had been strangled to death. The cause of death of the 6th woman has not been determined. Ohio police do not think that they will find other bodies, but a cadaver dog will be taken to the house to search further.

This crime in Cleveland is yet another example of the fact that rapists are repeat offenders and that their prison sentences should be extended considerably for their crimes. Anthony Sowell was a registered sex offender and was required to check in regularly at the Sheriff's office. He followed the rules given to him for his crime, yet still managed to rape women. He is now, not just a rapist, but a serial killer. This proves that the system does not work and needs to be drastically revamped. As it stands now, there are an awful lot of rapists that are loose, comply with their sheriff's office, and still rape and even kill women throughout our neighborhoods.

UPDATE:
Other bodies have been found at Sowell’s home. This brings the total number of bodies to 11.

15 Year old girl, gang raped at Richmond High School

A teenage girl that attends Richmond High School in California was gang raped last Saturday night by at least 4 rapists or as much as 7. She was attending the high school's homecoming dance and stepped out around 9:30 p.m., to get a ride with her dad, who was going to take her back home. The victim was also robbed and beaten. There were at least a dozen spectators that walked by, who did nothing and some might have even joined in on the rape. According to police, some of the spectators may have actually recorded the rape with their cell phone cameras. No one bothered to call the authorities.

So far there has been 2 arrests. A student was taken out of class by police and later arrested Monday night. Manuel Ortega, 19, not a student at Richmond High, was also arrested. Both men where charged with allegedly raping the teenage girl. Police mentioned that the victim knew at least one of the students.

The school had several security guards around the area where the dance was taking place but not in the actual area where the gang rape occurred. Richmond High also has surveillance cameras around campus, but they are broken and don't work.

The teenage victim was beaten so bad that she had to be taken to the hospital by helicopter. She remains there in stable condition.

Body found of 7 year old, Somer Thompson of Florida

Missing child's body was found in a Georgia landfill, near her home in Florida. Somer Thompson, the little girl who lived in Orange Park, FL, disappeared on Monday, while walking home from school with her sister and a friend. Somer was misbehaving and her sister asked her to stop. Somer got angry and ran ahead of the group and was never seen again.

An Orange Park detective suggested they search a close-by landfill where the little girl's neighborhood garbage trucks take their trash. On Tuesday all the trucks were inspected as they came to the landfill. This was a smart decision by the police. The body may have been buried under tons of garbage, if they had not acted so quickly. Police went through 100 tons of garbage before they found Somer Thompson's missing body. Somer's clothing and a birth mark, helped police identify her body.

The Orange Park police, so far, have been interviewing 70 registered sex offenders from that area. There are officially 161 offenders within a 5 mile radius of the little girl's home. Also a $25,000 reward is being offered to anyone who can lead police to the arrest of the person responsible for her murder.

For more complete information regarding this little girl, read entire article HERE.

Menstrual cramps, a thing of the past?

British scientists have come up with a new drug known as VA111913 that could be the answer for many women who suffer from severe menstrual cramps or painful periods. This new drug does not have a name yet but it is being tested on British and American women. Studies so far have been positive and it seems to be safe. This new pill is expected to be available in 4 years, if the studies go well. There are a few side effects, but they have not been mentioned yet.

VA111913 will relieve women who suffer from primary dysmenorrhea or painful periods. This means that if you are a woman with severe menstrual pain and have no other diseases or infections, you would be a good candidate to take it. Sometimes women have painful cramps that are due to other factors such as infections, fibroids, ovarian cysts, PID, etc., these are women considered to have secondary dysmenorrhea and this new drug will not help them.

This new drug will be a tremendous relief for us women who suffer from painful cramps! Not to mention the better quality of life for women. The benefits are mind boggling! We will be more productive at home with our children and the workforce will benefit as well. Less absenteeism for younger women with painful periods, who are still in school too. Many women now a days also take birth control pills to control the pain, they will not have to do this anymore. Parents of younger girls that take birth control pills for this reason, no longer will need to worry. They would be able to choose VA111913 for their daughter, instead of the birth control pills.

Let's cross our fingers! This might be a major breakthrough, even better than the Viagra hoopla! Hopefully it won't be expensive and will be sold over the counter, so all women will benefit.

Domestic Violence Victims Considered to Have Pre-Existing Condition!

We are talking about insurance companies here. Did you know that in 9 states of our country, if you have a domestic violence incident on your record, insurance companies can deny you coverage? This is absolutely unfair! We were not aware of this as we're sure many other people weren't. According to the National Women's Law Center, the following states allow insurance companies to deny coverage to domestic violence victims: Idaho, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Wyoming and the District of Columbia.

But this insurance company policy might be coming to an end soon according to the latest news. Democrats in Congress are making sure that this discriminatory insurance company practice will not be accepted in the new health reform bill. They also want people who know of domestic violence victims that were denied coverage, to let them know that perhaps now they might be covered by an insurance company. They should call their state department to find out and try to get coverage again.

Women On Guard (womenonguard.com) doesn't understand how on earth it was allowed in these 9 states to not cover domestic violence victims! So insurance companies figure that if a woman was injured by no fault of her own, she should be denied coverage? How about all the victims that are shot with a bullet every day? Should they be denied coverage? Or if someone crashes into your car with their car... should this not be covered, just because you drive a car? We don't understand on what grounds this was being allowed and why these states accepted it. We encourage that if you live in one of these states that allow this discrimination by insurance companies, to contact your state health department and demand this discriminatory insurance company policy be stopped!

Mother of Boy Locked in Closet has Previous Record

LaRhonda Marie McCall, 37, first made news this year because her 14 year old son had escaped from his home and informed police that he had been abused. McCall had basically kept her son a prisoner for 4 1/2 years. He was kept mostly in his bedroom closet and was not sent to school. Neighbors were not aware of his existence. The malnourished, bruised and covered with scars boy, escaped and managed to go to the police last week.

New information from yesterday came in that the child abuser, LaRhonda McCall, was previously convicted in her connection with the death of her 2 year old daughter. In 1995, when this occurred, LaRhonda went by a different name; LaRhonda Pressley. She has 6 other children and lived with her boyfriend Steve Hamilton, 38. Both LaRhonda and Steve were arrested on 20 complaints, each of child neglect and abuse and were jailed last Wednesday on $400,000 bond. Police information showed that both adults confessed to abuse by beating the boy multiple times and even using a tire jack while hitting the boy over the head.

How the neighbors of these child abusers never heard any disturbance or called the authorities is beyond us. Child abuse seems to be getting worse or we are just getting more informed. Either way, this is unacceptable and the perpetrators of crimes as extreme as these, should be locked up for life. LaRhonda was sent to jail and put on probation for her daughter's death. It is not clear how long she served. This would not have happened if she would have been given life in jail.

Stun Batons for Home Use

When you hear about batons, you think about the police using them against crowds. But batons aren't just for police use anymore. Many security guards and animal control officers use batons and now citizens are using them as well. We are talking about stun batons with electrical volts and not just the ordinary baton! You rarely will see someone on the streets carrying one, but many homeowners are starting to see the benefits of having one in their home instead of keeping a baseball bat under their bed!

Benefits of Stun Batons
The most obvious benefit that this self defense product has is the extra reach you acquire. Some, like the Expandable Stun Baton, can reach from 12 1/2 inches to 21 inches! Stun batons are not just for hitting someone over the head with, they also can electrically shock a person.

Stun Baton Features
Stun batons, like stun guns, have electrical volts that if used on a person, can knock them down and disable them temporarily. If a homeowner just test fires a stun baton into the air, it's intimidating electrical sound is often enough to stop an attacker in their tracks. Simply touching an attacker or home intruder with this self defense product for 3 to 5 seconds will deliver a high voltage shock, causing loss of balance and muscle control, confusion and disorientation, bringing them to their knees and making them incapable of aggressive moves. Besides having the extra reach as mentioned previously, some of these self defense products have ear piercing 130 decibel alarms besides the 1,000,000 volts that some batons contain. There are stun batons that also function as flashlights. This is even more convenient because it allows you to see the intruder if it is dark. Another feature that some stun batons have is the capacity to stun the attacker with the sides of the baton as well as with the tip of it. If the home intruder or attacker tries to grab the baton from you, he or she will be shocked while touching the baton's sides. Some of the newer stun baton models are rechargeable, so the homeowner does not need to purchase extra batteries. In addition, most come with a convenient safety switch, holster and lifetime warranty.

Stun Master Multi-Function Stun Gun

The latest and most powerful stun gun from Stun Master yet. If you take your safety seriously, look no further. This self defense product has a whopping 2,700,000 volts! You wouldn't think of it by just looking at it, it only measures 4.75” x 2.5” x 1”. We think it's also more stylish and easier to hold than any other stun gun on the market today.

Looks and power are not the only things that make the Stun Master Multi-Function Stun Gun different, there are several other features this self defense product comes with. The stun gun also has an ultra bright LED light, a red SOS flashing warning light, a 110 Decibel emergency siren, a holster AND a safety pin wrist strap. This strap has a pin that allows the stun gun to work, only when the pin is plugged in. This feature is great because if an attacker takes the stun gun from you, the strap stays around your wrist while it unplugs the pin. The attacker will be left with a stun gun that won't work. What else does this Stun Master Multi-Function Stun Gun have for self defense, you might ask? Well, to top it off, it is rechargeable! No more worries about buying batteries and the 100-240V AC adapter with LED indicator is, of course, included!

As mentioned before, this is the latest and as far as we know, the most powerful and convenient stun gun around!

Cash for Clunkers and Appliances... Gone Wild!

That's right, this is just like the government's cash for clunkers. Now you can also turn in your old appliance and get a government rebate for a new one. So if you have a fridge or dryer that doesn't work very well, here's your chance to replace it! Below is a handy list of what the life expectancy is for various appliances around the house.

• AC units: 8 - 15 yrs.
• Dishwashers: 5 - 12 yrs.
• Disposals: 5 - 12 yrs.
• Dryers: 8 - 12 yrs.
• Furnaces: 8 - 12 yrs.
• Refrigerators: 15 - 20 yrs.
• Stoves: 15 - 20 yrs.
• Washers: 8 - 12 yrs.
• Water Heaters: 8 - 12 yrs.

What about small appliances, like old toasters, coffee brewers and blenders? Na, I guess it needs to be something big.

Kinda makes you wonder... What else will the government give us cash for next? Maybe our old lawnmowers, snow blowers or that nasty old generator?

Will the government perhaps start helping small business owners by giving them rebates on their old printers and computers?

If this keeps going on, we might have to rename Uncle Sam to Uncle Santa!

The Taser M18 w/Laser is Coming Back!

A few months ago Taser International announced that they were discontinuing the Taser M18L. This announcement was not received well, especially by previous owners of the M18L. It was not known why Taser International had decided to stop making the M18L which was modeled after the police model M26.

The Taser M18L is expected to be on the market again by mid September! It's also important to mention that only the black Taser M18 with laser will be available.

Georgia Trailer Park Murders

Early Saturday, a man in Georgia called 911 about a mass killing. Police showed up at the scene and discovered 7 people dead and 2 in critical condition. The man who called, Guy Heinze Jr., 22, is not considered a suspect although he is under arrest on drug and other charges. Police have reason to believe that Heinze has given them false statements. Guy Heinze is also a relative to one of the victims. The murders where committed in a trailer park called New Hope in a town just north of Brunswick, GA and police believe that the murderer is still on the loose.
One of the critically injured victims in the trailer park died on Sunday, raising the total number of dead to eight. Autopsies of the first 7 dead victims were started on Sunday. The county's coroner's office director mentioned that the crime scene was brutal and that he had never seen a case like this in his 17 years at the coroner's office. Georgia police are not giving much information out to the public, but they did mention that the age range of the victims was from a young age to a very old age. They also stated that there was no evidence of it being a murder-suicide case, since none of the victims were suspected of being involved in the murders. Georgia authorities are warning the New Hope trailer park residents to be cautious of their surroundings. Twenty detectives have been assigned to the case and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is also involved.

2 Virginia Tech University students killed near campus

It happened 15 miles from Virginia Tech University's Blacksburg campus at a campground frequented by students. The students were shot to death in the parking lot of the Caldwell Fields campground. They were 19 year-old David Lee Metzler and 18 year-old Heidi Lynn Childs. David's body was found in the car and Heidi's was found outside the car. David was an industrial and systems engineering major and Heidi was majoring in biochemistry. Autopsies are going to be conducted but no suspect has been identified.

This incident follows the massacre that took place 2 years ago at Virginia Tech University by a student that killed 32 others and then himself. To add to that, in January of this year, a student killed a fellow student by beheading her in a campus cafe!

Virginia Tech University's President, Charles Steger, has been counseling the campus community and doesn't understand how this sort of violence is taking place in the area, at this time and in the campus community. He mentioned that tragedies like these are deeply painful to all. Memorial services will be posted on the university's Web site.

Detroit 12 year old boy shoots a woman to death

Demarco Harris, a juvenile, killed 24 year old Trisha Babcock on August 1st , during a robbery just after midnight in Detroit, Michigan. He shot her in the chest with a gun after a struggle. She had been sitting in her car and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Demarco Harris could face life in a Michigan prison for his felony. The prosecutor's office filed the case with an adult designation. In the state of Michigan, this means that a child is tried in juvenile court and after conviction, a judge has the option to sentence the juvenile as an adult or a juvenile or the decision can be postponed until the child reaches adulthood. Demarco Harris was charged with felony murder, armed robbery, having a firearm during a felony and violating curfew!

Times have really changed. What parent of a 12 year old, lets them out on the streets of Detroit pass midnight? Did the child's parents know he had a gun? Many parents accuse the schools or society in general if their children become criminals. But there is no excuse for parents to loose that special bond and communication with their child. It is up to the parent's, not the school, not the church or society, to raise children.

Almost all U.S. Money is Laced with Cocaine

A recent study done at the University of Massachusetts, has shown that 90 percent of our money is laced with cocaine. Baltimore, Boston and Detroit were the top cities on the list. The study was performed worldwide. Canada and the US were on the top of the world list, while Japan and China were at the bottom.

The study was conducted on paper bills and contamination is presumed to have occurred during drug deals and people snorting the drug through rolled up bills. But other factors that can contribute to contamination is using currency-counting machines. Traces of cocaine can contaminate bills that weren't even involved with cocaine. When banks use these machines, they can spread the cocaine traces from dirty bills to clean ones.

Which raises the question of, what else is money contaminated with? The possibilities are endless! I wonder what other particle traces are found in our money? Besides just billions of DNA, there sure are other traces. I'm sure traces of marijuana, tobacco and other drugs showed up. Viruses and bacteria can surely travel through paper currency and so can other substances. We all know that money goes through many hands.

Should Americans spend money on studies such as these? The University of Massachusetts study was done to help track crime trends and help police track dealers, but with banks using machines that spread traces everywhere else, I think this study was a waste of time and money. We should be focused on studies to improve our agriculture, our energy resources, medical research, etc. The real results of this University of Massachusetts' study is that it was pointless.

Neighborhood Watch Groups Now Twitter, Blog and Email!

Neighborhoods across America are taking advantage and using our technology to prevent crime.
Some communities are downsizing their police force due to the economy and neighborhoods are responding by forming more neighborhood watch groups. In fact, the National Sheriff's Association office shows an increase of neighborhood watch groups across the US. In 2005 there were 5,000 registered neighborhood watch groups compared to 20,000 groups in 2009!

These watch groups are high tech now. Twittering, emailing and text messaging are a fast communication tool that really keeps all the members in the watch group in touch with what is going on in their neighborhoods. Members of these groups tweet a constant stream of crime alerts to a privacy-protected Twitter address. Others blog about certain activities that are suspicious and warn their neighbors. Sometimes they text message to all neighbors and request for everyone to call the police about a suspicious crime activity. According to groups, the more calls the police get, the quicker they respond.

Most city police officials offer training to these neighborhood watch groups. They explain how to identify suspicious behavior and how to respond to it. They also warn block watch members who aren't trained by police that they should be cautious of overstepping legal boundaries, such as peeking through people's windows, etc.

WOW, who would of thought that all these Twitters and text messages were going to actually keep us safer in the future?

Pepper Spray Pen or Stun Pen for College

What could be more perfect than to have a self defense product that blends right in with the college scene?

Fall is getting closer and as you or your child start packing their backpack for college, you should consider adding a self defense product. A pepper spray pen or a stun pen look like your typical school supplies, but these are no ordinary pens! Both of these pens look normal and provide you with the element of surprise against an attacker on campus or where ever you may be.

The Pepper Spray Pen contains 17% pepper that can disable an attacker as far as 5 to 7 feet away. This pen contains approximately 6 bursts and also a UV Dye to help police with identification when the person is apprehended. A one-second spray to the face will cause temporary blindness, choking, coughing, and nausea, bringing the attacker to their knees. Their eyes will burn and hurt so much that they would not be able to open them. In some cases, the eyes swell up and slam shut! This self defense product is available in burgundy/black or pink and has a pocket clip just like any other pen.

The Stun Pen looks more like a magic marker and contains 1 million volts of power! Just test firing this stun pen into the air is often enough to stop an attacker. As the bright electric current pulsates across the top of the unit it creates an intimidating electrical sound. An attacker with any sense at all will be stopped in their tracks. If the sight and sound doesn't stop them, a jolt from this unit certainly will. The stun pen also comes with a built-in LED flashlight, safety switch and even a holster! Although it comes with a holster it is slim enough to carry in your pocket or purse. The holster is if you prefer to carry it on your belt. This self defense product is available in black and batteries are included.

Keep in mind that safety in college is just as important as getting good grades!

College Dorm Safety

When most people think of college safety they picture the student that is out and about campus grounds. But what we sometimes fail to think about is the college dorm environment. Students can be intruded upon while they are in their dorms as well as outside. If you are a student or a parent of a student in college, you should consider a small item to add to the rest of the college supplies for safety.

A college dorm room would be a safer place to study and sleep if it had a door alarm. There are a variety of affordable door alarms available on the market today.

One of the most popular is the Door Stop Alarm. It's perfect for dorm rooms or even hotel rooms and apartments for that matter! It actually works like the old rubber door stops that were so popular years ago, but it also has an alarm that sounds if someone tries to come in. You just simply place it under the door! The Door Stop Alarm also has an on/off switch that prevents it from sounding accidentally and a sensitivity switch which prevents tampering. If an intruder attempts to open the door, the wedge-shaped design will prevent it from opening and activate a 120 db alarm.

Another popular dorm room alarm is the Personal Alarm with Flashing Light. This is mostly a 130db alarm that you can carry with you wherever you go, but it also has the added bonus of being able to be used as a door or even window alarm! It has 2 accessory pieces that when attached to the alarm allows it to be adjusted for different situations. One of the accessories is a cord that attaches to the alarm and is clipped to your belt, backpack, purse or wrapped around your wrist. If someone attempts to take it from you, the alarm and flashing light gets activated. The other accessory can be used on doors and even windows. When either of these entrances has the alarm connected to it and it is opened, the alarm goes off and the light flashes. This particular connector can also be placed under a laptop, for example, if someone tries to lift and take it, it also will sound the alarm and flash the light!

Lastly, a personal 116db alarm called the Sport Strobe Personal Alarm by Mace is also one to consider for safety. It's features are similar to the previous alarm but the flashing light can also be turned on as a constant light by pressing a small button on the side of the unit.

All of these alarms are small, very affordable and easy to use. These door alarms deter any intruder from sneaking into a college dorm.

Safety Tips for College Women

Rape or sexual assaults against college women is a huge problem today. Information from reliable sources have disclosed alarming statistics. One study done by researchers at RTI International, Bowling Green State University, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill which was released in June, 2009, is of particular concern. The study was funded by a grant from the National Institute of Justice, which is part of the U.S. Department of Justice.

The study showed that almost 20 percent of undergraduate women were sexually assaulted during their time in college. Alcohol or drugs played a factor as well. Statistics also showed that 11 percent of college women were assaulted when they were incapacitated and unable to give consent. Freshmen and sophomore women where targeted more than their junior and senior classmates for sexual assaults while they were under the influence of alcohol or any other drug. Other similar findings were announced by The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), which found that college women were 4 times more likely to be sexually assaulted or raped than other women in society.

With all these sexual assault statistics, it's no wonder that women in college need to follow some safety tips while on campus. If you are a woman planning to attend college or a parent of a student, you should keep in mind that prevention is number one! Please make sure that you follow the basic self defense or safety tips shown below or if you are a parent, inform your daughter about them.
  • Keep the college police number handy, call them if you need an escort
  • Most colleges offer self defense classes, enroll in one
  • Buddy system; try not to walk alone, especially during the night
  • At parties:
    - Keep your eye on your drink,
    don't leave it unattended
    - Never drink out of the punch bowl
    - Always get your own drink,
never have others get it for you
  • Carry some sort of self defense product, such as a pepper spray or a stun gun
  • Always be aware of your surroundings
  • Let your fellow students know about these safety tips
It is common sense to follow these tips, just as it is to wear a seat belt when you drive. It's always better to be informed and prepared than to be careless and become a victim.

Send Your Child Safely to College

Fall is gradually getting closer and before you know it, your daughter or son will be headed back to college or going for the first time.

Most parents of these students make sure that their child get all the clothes they need, the books that are required and that their backpack is filled with all the tools they need to perform well and hopefully graduate with honors. There is one thing that is overlooked by parents when gathering all these materials and that is the self defense product or tool. What tool is that, you might ask? This is the simple pepper spray or stun device or even a citizen taser that they might need if confronted with an attacker. A must have item when walking through campus grounds.

A self defense product added to a child's backpack, is a small investment that parents overlook when sending their kids off to college. Especially if your child is a female. It is a known fact that college women are victims of sexual assault 4 times more than other women in society. Women are more vulnerable to sexual assaults than men. It is crucial for your daughter to carry a self defense product. Don't assume your son will always be safe either. There are many incidents where college men have been victims of attacks too. These incidents against males are most of the time, attempts of theft or bullying.

College campuses are like small cities, where students go from one building to another. Sometimes classes, student gatherings or parties take place at night and this is when it becomes crucial to have some sort of protection like a pepper spray, a stun gun or a taser which can prevent sexual assaults or thefts. A stun device such as a stun gun or taser are a little pricier than pepper spray, but each person has their particular preference. This is when you might want to ask your son or daughter what they would prefer. Many of these items come disguised as other things. Some pepper spray look like lipstick containers, some stun guns look like cell phones or pens....

Please keep in mind your child's safety as well as their education when sending them off to college!

Would You Ban Plastic Bottled Water?

A small town in Australia is doing just that. Residents of Bundanoon, Australia claim that it is not good for the environment, along with other complaints.

How far would you go if you knew for a fact that tap water was no less hazardous to drink than bottled water? Many experts claim that tap water is just as safe as bottled water and that most bottled water actually lack certain minerals that humans need to stay healthy. There also have been recent scientific studies showing that plastic bottles release a synthetic type of hormone that makes it easier for women to get pregnant! Maybe Bundanoon, Australia is on the right track...

We all know that food franchises such as McDonalds and others, discontinued serving their drinks in plastic containers and are now using paper cups. They were aware of the contaminants that leak out of plastic containers when heated... Many people still drink bottled water in their cars, after the container has been previously heated by the sun.

Many federal organizations in the United States have discontinued handing out bottled water in their meetings too. This is not because it is unhealthy but because it also wastes a lot of federal funds and taxpayers money, to make and transport bottled water. In fact over 60 cities in the US do not have bottled water in their city meetings and many cities in Canada are doing the same thing.

I think that if we must buy bottled water, that we at least request the bottlers to use glass instead of plastic containers. Same for milk and other plastic contained food manufacturers. Besides, it tastes BETTER!

Fiesta Puerto Rico Booth

Well we were hoping to take many pictures yesterday of the festival, but the weather did not cooperate. I managed to take a photo of our booth with Susan chowing down... and that was about it. The music and food was great, but not very many people showed up since they predicted a 70% chance of rain. And rained it did, more like pouring buckets throughout the day. We would have to cover the self defense products with plastic and luckily our canopy had extra sides to zip up if we needed it. Susan, the other owner of WomenOnGuard.com, and I had to hold our canopy down, several times, so the wind would not blow it away. We did have 4 small buckets with cement in them to hold it down, but it was not enough! Many booths just closed down shop, but not us, we stayed until 7 PM! Anyhow it was a lot of fun and we are looking forward to participating in more festivals.

Sexual Offenders or Predators in Your Neighborhood?

When was the last time you checked to see if any sexual offenders or predators live in your area? Or, have you ever checked?

You hear about this on the news yet, many people never bother to look up this information. Sexual offenders and predators are living amongst us everyday, yet most of us don't bother looking them up.

Whether you are a man or a woman and want to be safe against these violators, you should look them up. If you are a parent, it is crucial that you know where these criminals live to make sure that your children don't get near them.

It is very easy, just get on the internet and check the website of your state's Law Enforcement Office. You can also log onto your County Sheriff Office's website. There are many other websites available on the internet to look up these individuals. Most of these sites require you to fill in your address info. After that a map will come up on the screen showing all the streets near your address. The sexual offenders and or predators will be highlighted with bright colors in your neighborhood. These maps are usually interactive, so you can zoom in or out to see other violators that live further away from you. Some maps even have the feature of showing you pictures, information and even addresses of these criminals by simply placing your mouse over the highlighted spot.

Always be aware of your surroundings and neighborhood, even the areas that you can't see directly around you. Know your neighbors and inform them about these sexual criminals that live near you.

Pepper Spray Donation to Rape Treatment Center in Miami, FL

PRESS RELASE:
WomenOnGuard.com donated pepper spray to The Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center. The Center is part of the Public Health Trust of Miami-Dade County, Florida, which also operates Jackson Health System, including Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Pompano Beach, FL, June 23, 2009. WomenOnGuard.com recently moved it’s corporate office to Pompano Beach, FL. The website sells non-lethal, self defense products such as Mace, pepper spray, stun guns, Tasers and personal alarms. It donates on a regular basis to women’s crisis centers or a similar cause around the nation.

The Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center (RTC) was chosen for the websites donation after statistics provided by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement showed that Miami and surrounding areas had the highest numbers in rape by force. State investigators say that 10,823 forcible sex offenses were reported in the State of Florida last year alone. Of the total Florida offenses, 1,294 of them were in Miami, Dade County area and 640 assaults were rapes by force. RTC provides a comprehensive approach to the care and treatment of victims of sexual assault or abuse. They have a Crisis Unit, Counseling Unit and other departments to improve and enhance the quality of life of these victims. Cynthia Sinclair, Director of Operations for RTC, mentioned that the timing for the pepper spray donation was great because a woman recently had come into the center asking for pepper spray. She was glad that they would now be able to give pepper spray to any woman requesting some sort of extra protection item.

Regarding the number of rapes in South Florida, Susan Eaton, co-owner of WomenOnGuard.com mentioned: “These statistics are very alarming. Miami is suppose to be a fun, easy, warm place to live, work or vacation. Rape statistics such as these will deter people from coming or living in Miami. Dade County is not the only place with high rape statistics; Broward and Palm Beach County statistics are pretty high too. Men, but mostly women, are the victims and the figures provided by investigators include only the cases reported. There are countless assaults that go unreported because of shame or fear.”

WomenOnGuard.com’s other owner, Martha Z. Martinez, informed that it is a well-known fact that sexual assaults are more prominent during vacation times. Summer and the winter Holidays, such as New Years, have the highest incidents of rapes. People are more vulnerable because they let their guard down, socialize more and sometimes are drinking alcohol, which impairs their judgment. Rapists know this and they take advantage of the situation. She wants to urge women to take extra precautions against assaults this summer and to be more aware of their surroundings, not just during social events, but while exercising and enjoying the outdoors too.

Detroit Man Kills People for Money

Vincent Smothers, 28, will be going to trial soon for being a hit man in Detroit. He confessed to police: "I don't have a profession", "I kill people for money." Detroit Police caught him in a suburban alley and heard his confession of several killings in Detroit. According to the authorities, it is very rare for someone to be charged with so many death crimes.

Smothers, the killer, informed police that the killings for him were easy and that he would shoot people while talking on his cell phone. He claimed that all but one of his victims were drug dealers. He provided police with very detailed accounts on the various shootings. The one crime victim he actually felt remorse about was Rose Cobb, a police officer's wife, who he felt was innocent. According to Smothers, her husband, David Cobb, who was having an affair at the time, hired him in December 2007 to murder his wife. That Detroit officer hung himself the following September. Smothers claimed he stopped his killings after that. He mentioned: "My stomach was in knots..." and that he couldn't kill people anymore after that.

"I knew at the time these crimes were committed they were wrong and that there would be a price to pay," he wrote. "After Cobb's wife, I could no longer have anything to do with murdering people."

"I can't bring them back," Smothers wrote, "but I hope this allows their families to know that someone is going to pay who was behind what happened to their loved ones."

His very lengthy confessions gave judges probable cause to put Vincent Smothers on trial. Trial date has not yet been announced.

Craigslist is Helping Catch Rapists

Seems like Craigslist is contributing to society in a positive way, lately.
With their help, police have made a 2nd arrest of another rapist. This particular rape occurred in Kannapolis, NC, on May 31st.

Craigslist, an online classified service, helped arrest Rodney Liverman Sr., who is 39 years old. It so happens that Liverman was actually hired by the husband of the victim to rape his wife! The rape actually happened in the home of the victim. The rapist went into her bedroom with a knife and asked for money, proceeded to rape her, then asked her to go into the bathroom. What is really sick, is that the husband was present when all this was occurring and did nothing to prevent it! At some point police mentioned that the woman was able to grab the knife and threw it directly at her husband, who was just standing by, watching. After the rapist left, the victim's husband told her to get in the shower and to NOT call 911.

Rodney Liverman Sr., is in jail on a $250,000 bond. Liverman is charged in this case with 1st degree rape and three other previous sexual offenses. The victim's husband who remains anonymous, due to his connection with the sexual assault victim, was charged with 1st degree rape, also remains in jail on a $200,000 bond. He has a previous record as well, of indecent exposure that occurred last year in front of a pizza delivery woman.

We praise the Kannapolis, NC Police in association with Craigslist, in capturing these two criminals!

Senate Passes Bill - Prevents Domestic Violence Victims from Being Evicted

The California Senate just passed Bill SB 782, which prevents landlords from evicting domestic violence victims. This new bill will encourage victims to defend themselves and not face eviction from their home. Eviction has discouraged victims, female and male, to file complaints of domestic violence or sexual assault. SB 782 will encourage women to step forward.

Many landlords have a nuisance clause in their rental agreement that allows them to evict tenants if there is a lot of noise, disturbance, police activity or complaints. When landlords evict domestic violence victims, it's like being victimized again by being pressured to move. Many of these domestic violence victims which are mostly women, end up homeless. Under SB 782, landlords would not be allowed to use their lease clause to evict women under these circumstances. Landlords however can evict the perpetrator of the abuse. It should also be stated that the law presently allows a victim to break their lease and go to a victim's shelter if they choose to do so.

SB 782 will protect victims, women or men, from being evicted only if they show a written statement by a qualified third party, such as a police officer, licensed clinical social worker or therapist. The tenant however, will still be responsible for the lease payments and other clauses.

If you are a victim of domestic violence or if you want to report an incident of domestic violence, call the 24-hour-a-day toll-free National Hotline at 1-(800) 799-SAFE or 1-(800) 787-3224 (TDD).

Buy a Taser or a Stun Gun?

This article is to inform you, as a future self defense product purchaser, the differences between 2 products, both of which use electricity as a means of protection.

Main Differences
Many people would love to have a Taser, but some cannot afford one. What they don't realize is that a stun gun is a good alternative, and at a much lower price. They both utilize a means of electricity to temporarily impair an attacker. The main difference between a Taser and a stun gun is that the Taser will let you take down an attacker from 15 feet away while a stun gun requires close contact. The stun gun requires you to be at least within an arms length so that you can make contact between the stun gun and the person. On the other hand, the Taser shoots out 2 probes that are wired to the product which will travel up to 15 feet. One good feature that the stun gun has over the Taser is that you can always activate the stun gun and scare the attacker with merely the noise the stun gun makes. This makes a dramatic lightning effect and is very loud which can deter an attacker from getting near you. It's handy to scare away dogs too.

Stun Gun Pros
Stun guns are not only cheaper than Tasers, they are less expensive to use. Every time you deploy a Taser cartridge, which shoots the 2 probes, it is costing you $25. Each cartridge is a one shot deal. The cheapest citizen Taser will run you around $300, while the average cost of a stun gun is $45. Another expense which should be considered is the battery cost. Now grant it, the Taser's battery life or power magazine's life is 50 plus firings for the Taser C2 or a shelf life of 10 years compared to the batteries you buy for a stun gun which can be purchased at a department store for much less. Most stun guns use a 9-volt battery. If you use your Taser C2 more than 50 times, your cost to replace the power magazine is approximately $32.

Some stun guns come with a light just like Tasers do. Stun guns also come in different sizes. You can get a stun gun that is as small as a cigarette box and packs 1,000,000 volts of power! Furthermore, stun guns don't just come in different sizes, they also come in different shapes. Some stun guns can also trick the attacker by looking like a flashlight, a cell phone, or a pen. There are also stun batons that come in handy for home protection instead of the old baseball bat under the bed...

Taser Pros
Pros on Tasers you ask? Tasers are the weapon of choice now a days for police officers around the world. This is a big plus on behalf of Tasers. Tasers are very reliable or the police would not use them. Perhaps the biggest advantage, besides the 15 feet reach capability, is the Taser's laser beam. The laser is a sharp red beam that points at the target you are shooting at. This facilitates aiming and avoids missing a target, which in most cases is someone that is trying to attack you! It also has an LED light that facilitates night vision. Tasers also come in different citizen models.

The Taser C2, which was launched in August of 2007 and available in different colors and the Taser X26c which also comes with a choice of colors. Both models have outstanding features. The C2 has a unique trigger that can keep stunning for 30 seconds after you let go of the trigger. This gives a potential victim, a window of opportunity to lay the unit down and to run out of harms way. If the Taser was taken or damaged while the unit was being used in self defense and you get a police report, Taser International will replace the unit free of charge.

The Taser X26c features go beyond the regular Taser capabilities but it's also the priciest of the two. For example, you can attach a Taser X26 Cam Audio/Video to it and be able to record 1.5 hours of audio and MPEG video. This attachment also has the capability to record subjects in complete darkness by using an infrared illuminator. The Taser X26c also has a central information display to track battery life, etc. Also, just as stun guns, both the Taser X26c and the Taser C2 can be used as a stunning device by touching a person with the front end of the unit. This is possible only when a cartridge is not loaded into the Taser.

Both the Taser and the stun gun are excellent non-lethal, self defense weapons. These products can be purchased in most states. However, a few states have restrictions on stunning devises and Tasers. Please make sure you review your state's restrictions before you decide to purchase.

Milwaukee Serial Killer Update

The Milwaukee serial killer has now been linked to 7 cases! Another prostitute's body that was found behind a vacant house is the 7th victim of the serial killer. DNA results came in yesterday linking Florence McCormick, 28 to the killer. She was killed in 1995. As mentioned in the previous post, authorities are investigating DNA of 20 more unsolved homicide prostitute victims. The serial killer apparently targeted prostitutes for his victims and afterwards would dispose of their bodies behind vacant houses. Read full story here.

A Serial killer is loose in Milwaukee

This killer is unknown and has no police record but his DNA has been found on the bodies of 5 prostitutes in Milwaukee. Over the last 21 years, this serial killer has taken advantage of these consensual prostitute victims. The first victim was on October 10th, 1986. The serial killer's last prostitute victim was in April 2007.

There are 20 other DNA samples of murdered prostitutes which are unsolved homicide cases that will be sent to the state crime laboratory. These will be compared to the serial killer's DNA, to find out if there are more victims linked to him.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney, John Chisholm mentioned that his office is determined "to find the killer that's in our community". He went on to say, "We are committed to bringing justice to the victims and their families." Since the serial killer has no criminal record, authorities will have to depend on DNA and profiles with close matches to his, in order to get any future leads.
