Safe Place in Austin Texas Gets Donation From Us

This is the 28th ongoing, crisis center, pepper spray donation. WomenOnGuard™ started donating nationally, back in 2007. This next donation is for Safe Place, in Austin, Texas... Since our website’s inception in October of 2006, we vowed to help women stay safe.

Safe Place is located in Austin, Texas and has several programs and services, to help the surrounding community. A 24-hour Hotline for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence is available, as well as hospital help for victims of rape. This includes forensic and physical medical service. The Safe Place also offers counseling, legal assistance and emergency shelter for victims. They also work with the Stockton-Hicks Family Tree Child Development Center & the University of Texas - University Charter School, George M. Kozmetsky Campus, for the care and education of children that belong to the victims. To get more information, you can visit the Safe Place website.

Woman Left Near Dead After Being Brutally Attacked by Two Homeless People

We at WomenOnGuard.com, decided to make our monthly product donation in support of Jen Hall, a woman who was brutally attacked by two homeless people on August 25, 2008. As you know WomenOnGuard.com donates self defense products to a different cause around the country each month.

On the South Side of Chicago, two homeless people brutally attacked Jen who was out celebrating her 36th birthday. She was repeatedly kicked in the head until she became unconscious. Most medical experts state that nine out of 10 people who experience the type of injuries that Jen did, usually end up brain dead and do not survive at all. Jen did survive. Unfortunately, she did not have medical coverage. She was 1 month away from being eligible for medical insurance through her new employer. There has been much support from her family, friends and even the kindness of strangers. Fundraisers have been held and will continue to be held in hopes of alleviating some of the burden from the medical bills that Jen has incurred. We are donating self defense products to the cause, which will be sold at the fundraisers. All proceeds from the sale of these products will go into the charitable trust fund that has been set up for Jen to help offset some of the medical expenses. Jen has made great progress but has a long way to go.

Most women are unsure of where to purchase self defense products. Department stores don’t carry items such as these and gun shops are very intimidating to women. Hope for kids that are bullied in school

A new website is being used in some schools now called schooltipline.com. It allows bullied students to communicate with their school authorities about threats or threatening information they receive. It protects the identity of the sender and allows for two-way anonymous conversation. This is great for kids, especially shy kids, to come forward and get investigations started on bullies in their school.

Overall, the results of this new website have been very beneficial. There has been some misinformation provided by kids, but school personnel have stated that it is better to get some false information along with the legitimate information. Much of the information that has been reported by kids has been investigated, proven accurate and resolved.

I guess some may say that this is a little too much and that it may embark on the privacy of children. I think that children need to be monitored and guided as much as possible before they move out from under our roofs. Most importantly, if they are being physically abused by another kid.

WomenOnGuard.com Donates Products to Standing Together Against Rape (STAR)

WomenOnGuard.com has chosen this month to donate products to: Standing Together Against Rape (STAR), a program of Lighthouse Counseling Center. STAR is a women's crisis center located in Montgomery, Alabama. They are a 24-hour crisis intervention program that assists sexual assault victims and their families. The staff has qualified master’s level counselors who help victims recover from their traumatic experience by providing individual counseling and emotional support. STAR also provides in-house forensic sexual assault exams.
Indian Beach, NC March 17, 2008. The site includes hotlines, safety tips, helpful links and a blog. This website, which was started in 2006, is targeted toward women by encouraging them to purchase non-lethal self-defense products instead of deadly weapons. Since women are more often the victims of violent crime, the website also donates 25 products on a monthly basis to a different women’s crisis center around the country.

Shirley Jones, Program Director of STAR, informed WomenOnGuard.com during a phone conversation, that in April they were having an event called “Take Back The Night”. This event is held annually during the month of April which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The purpose of this rally and candlelight vigil is to bring community members together to raise awareness about sexual assault and take a stand against this horrendous crime! STAR will plan and host several activities during the month of April. One activity will include providing self-defense classes for women. The event will include pepper spray giveaways donated by WomenOnGuard.com.

“We want to point out that March is Women’s History Month”, says Martha Z. Martinez, Co-Owner of WomenOnGuard.com. She goes on to state, “We should especially acknowledge the fact that there is a problem in this country as well as in other countries regarding women being abused, raped or even killed in epidemic proportions. This is in fact why crisis centers such as STAR exist”. She also mentions that women should take their personal safety into their own hands instead of always relying on law enforcement or male figures in their life. Martha says, “Unfortunately most women are physically weaker than men, so they need to carry a self-defense product for their own protection”.
