Are Stun Guns Legal in My State?

We come across many customers that aren't sure how authority in their neck of the woods, feel about stun guns. We hope the following information will answer this very important self defense question.
United States of America Map from Wikipedia

Before we get into the legalities, lets just make sure we all understand that a stun gun is not the same as a Taser. Citizen Tasers shoot 2 probes, attached to a wire with electricity, that reaches a criminal and disables them. A Stun Gun also disables a criminal with electricity. But it doesn't shoot probes 15 feet away. With this weapon, you have to be at arm's length and touch the person with it, in order to disable them.

Most States in the USA, allow the use of stun guns for self defense, but there are a few that don't and consider the use of them a felony.

THE STATES that currently don't allow these devices are:
  • HAWAII
  • ILLINOIS - Carrying is OK if you have an FOID card
  • MASSACHUSETTS
  • MICHIGAN - Will be legal to carry sometime in August
  • NEW JERSEY
  • NEW YORK
  • RHODE ISLAND
  • WISCONSIN - OK for a CCW licensee or an out-of-state licensee
  • US VIRGIN ISLANDS

Some States actually allow stun guns to be used by citizens but have cities in which they are absolutely illegal to use.

THE CITIES that currently don't allow these devices are:
Keychain Stun Gun, In Pink or Black

  • ANNAPOLIS, MD
  • BALTIMORE, MD
  • BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD
  • CHICAGO, IL
  • DENSION/CRAWFORD COUNTY, IA
  • DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
  • PHILADELPHIA
The above pretty much summarizes the legalities for the use of stun guns in self defense, within our country. The information provided is as it presently stands. As noted above, there can be future changes. If you have any other questions regarding citizens and these devices, please feel free to contact us!
