Is Your Daughter Attending College For The First Time?

Parents that have young women going to college for the first time, get nervous about their child's safety. But if you prepare your daughter with safety tips, they should be just fine!

The statistics are not encouraging; One in four college women report that they have survived rape or an attempt of rape during their lifetime. But there are ways to avoid dangerous situations around college campuses. Below you will find some tips, that you should pass along to your daughter before you send her off for her education.

Safety Tips For College Women
• Always take a Personal Alarm with you to notify campus police if you're in danger
• Avoid taking evening classes, if at all possible or ask for campus police escort
• When at parties, never drink from a punch bowl, it might have date rape pills in it
• Never drink from an open container or glass if you didn't see it get poured
• Always request for a closed or sealed beverage, if someone offers you a drink
• Never leave your beverage alone, keep it with you at all times, even if it's just water
• When meeting a stranger, introduce him, so your friends remember him
• If with a group of friends, always have a designated sober driver
• If you are alone at a bar and intoxicated, request a taxi, don't drink and drive

Besides the safety tips we also recommend that women or in this case, your daughter, always carry "Drink Guard" cards that we have on our website. Let her know that it's best to go to the ladies room and perform a quick test, rather than to become a victim of date rape.

The Solution to Date Rape Drugs!

We've all heard of some guys placing drugs into women's drinks at bars, to later date rape them. Now women can do a quick and easy test, before consuming any beverage at bars or parties.

Check for drugs in your drink with these test strips.Us ladies will not put up anymore with these low lives that want to sedate us in order to rape us. Fortunately, WomenOnGuard.com, now sells DrinkSafe strips!

DrinkSafe Test Strips are simple, 3.5 x 2.5 inch strips or cards. You can keep them in your purse or pocket when you go out to a bar or party. Use them to check for date rape drugs! Be it an alcoholic beverage or not, you can check it for a bad substance very easily. All us women have to do, is place 2 drops with our finger or a straw on the pink and green circles. If they turn into a different color (other than just darker when wet), the beverage is tainted with a drug! For example, if the green colored circle turns blue instead of just darker because it is wet… someone has added a drug to your beverage!

Keep in mind that both the top and the bottom circles need to be wetted. Either the left 2 circles or the right 2 circles. Each strip contains 2 separate tests (4 circles). You can purchase the 5 strips package which really contains a total of 10 tests! Or, you can purchase the 10 strips package which really offers you 20 tests.

A very simple solution to an ever increasing date rape issue around the world. So go out there and drink safely… But don't drink too much!

Nightclub Safety for Single Women

Saturday night and you're all dressed up to have a good time at your favorite nightclub! You plan to meet some friends or perhaps get to know some new people. It will be a great evening if you keep your head on straight and practice some common sense safety measures.

To start off, one of the best safety practices when single women go to a nightclub is to go with a friend or friends. Not only will you be safer, but you can select who the designated driver will be. Also an important advantage of having a friend go with you is that if you meet someone, you can introduce them to your friend. This is good practice, in case for some reason you disappear, your friend would remember the person's face and their name. It might be nice if you add some comments while you introduce them, perhaps what wonderful eyes or hair they have. Mentioning something that describes their appearance is important. "Where are you from?", is a good conversation piece too! Plus, never leave a nightclub with a person you just met! If you go alone to a nightclub, make sure to introduce yourself to several people.

If you decide to have an alcohol drink at the nightclub, keep date rape drugs in mind. Go directly to the bartender for your drink and watch him or her pour it. Always keep your eyes on your drink! If a waiter brings you a drink, make sure that it is in a closed container. Remember to request a closed container when ordering your drink. Single women should NEVER drink from an open punch bowl, either!

If you go to a nightclub on your own, and have been drinking, ask the bartender to call for a taxi. Never drink alcohol and drive. If the nightclub is far from your home, perhaps the taxi can take you to a nearby hotel. The next morning, you can get a ride to your car and drive safely home. Better yet, if you know you are going to drink alcohol, just take a taxi to the nightclub and a taxi back home! Or even some sort of public transportation, to and from the nightclub.

One more thing... single women should ALWAYS carry some sort of personal safety device such as a pepper spray, stun gun or personal alarm. Especially if they are going to take public transportation and are alone!

Domestic Violence Shelter Receives Pepper Spray from Women On Guard™

Women On Guard™ donated pepper spray to the Crisis Center of Northern New Mexico, in Espanola, New Mexico.

Pompano Beach, FL, August 2, 2010. Women On Guard™ is an e-commerce website that sells self defense products such as pepper spray, mace, tasers, stun guns and personal alarms. The owners of WomenOnGuard.com, Susan Eaton and Martha Z. Martinez, regularly make pepper spray donations to women’s crisis centers or similar causes around the country. The website which was started in 2006, also offers Hotlines and Safety Tips, among other information regarding self defense.

The mission of the Crisis Center of Northern New Mexico is to impact the cycle of domestic violence by providing crisis intervention with short and long-term programs in the service areas of Rio Arriba, Los Alamos and Northern Santa Fe counties of New Mexico. They provide a safe haven (shelter) for persons who have sustained physical, sexual, psychological violence or a combination thereof without prejudice to age, race, creed, gender, color or sexual preference. The Crisis Center also provides counseling, advocacy, education and other services as needed to accomplish the mission. It also provides public education and information relating to the nature of physical, sexual and psychological domestic violence.

Susan Eaton, one of the owners of Women On Guard, expressed her concerns about violence during the summer months. She mentioned, “The rate of sexual assaults unfortunately increases when many people take time off from work or school. This is mostly due to more social interaction, be it at parties, walking down city streets while enjoying the weather or just at a barbecue in a park. Many times there is alcohol involved that result in people making silly decisions, like leaving a party with a complete stranger or accepting a drink that contains a date rape drug.”

Women On Guard also wanted to make sure that people, especially women, take precautions during this summer. Below is a short list of some of their safety tips:
  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Never walk alone at night, no matter how safe it may seem. Ask someone to go w/you.
  • Exercise routines such as walking or running outdoors, should have a variable schedule, don’t be too predictable for a potential attacker.
  • Always get your own drink at parties or bars. Watch it being poured, keep an eye on it and never leave your drink unattended. Don’t drink out of a punch bowl. When ordering beer, it’s best to get it in a sealed bottle.
  • Never accept to leave a nightclub or party with a stranger. If you are intoxicated, have the barkeeper or host of the party, call for a taxi.
  • Keep in mind that intoxicated individuals are potential victims for attackers. Criminals take advantage of people who have their guard down.

Safety Tips for The Holidays

Shopping Safety Tips
  • Even though you are rushing and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you. If possible, park your car in an area of high pedestrian activity. Avoid remote areas.
  • Lock your car and close the windows, even if you are only gone for a few minutes.
  • Lock your packages out-of-sight in the trunk. Place your valuables in the trunk before you get to your destination, not after, a thief may be watching.
  • Be sure and lock your car, many opportunists simply look for unlocked cars.
  • Always report a theft to the police.
  • Teach your children to go to the store clerk and ask for help if you become separated while shopping. They should never go to the parking lot or the car alone.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible; and if the credit card receipt has carbons, ask for these too. Notify issuers immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen, or misused.
  • Be extra careful with purses and wallets. They may become targets for crime in crowded shopping areas, at bus stops, and on public transportation.
  • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
Home Safety Tips
  • At home, be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. Leave lights and a radio or television on so the house looks occupied. Do not put large displays of holiday gifts in view of your windows or doors.
  • If you go away for the holidays, try to keep your home appearing "lived in": Get an automatic timer for your lights. Have a neighbor watch your home and pick-up your newspapers and mail.
  • If you use lights on your tree, make sure that they are in good working order.
  • And lastly, when hosting a party, find alternative transportation for intoxicated guests; and when going out drinking, please remember: Don't Drink and Drive!
Party Safety Tips
  • Always get your own drink. Watch it being poured.
  • Don't leave it unattended.
  • Don't drink or taste anybody else's drink.
  • Don't accept drinks from anyone else.
  • When in bars or clubs always get your drink directly from the bartender and do not take your eyes off the bartender or your order; don't use the waitress or let somebody go to the bar for you.
  • At parties, only accept drinks in closed containers: bottles, cans or tetra packs.
  • Never leave your drink unattended or turn your back on your table.
  • Do not drink from open beverage sources like punch bowls, pitchers or tubs.
  • Drugs used to spike drinks can be colorless and tasteless so you might not realize that anything has been added.
  • Keep your eyes and ears open; if there is talk of date rape drugs or if friends seem "too intoxicated" for what they have taken, leave the party or club immediately and don't go back.
  • Be aware of the behavior of your friends. Is their behavior out of character? Do they seem too "out of it" for what they've had? See the section on Drink Spiking to find out what to do.
  • Watch out for your friends. Are they binge drinking or taking drugs? Are they making safe decisions? Are they OK?
  • If your friend needs to sober up or straighten out, check to see that they are OK. Are they alone? Who is with them? Are they safe?
  • Encourage people who are drunk to drink water or eat something. Keep an eye on them, if you can.
  • Do you really trust whom you are going home with? Are you sure they won't make you do anything you don't want to do? Will they take "NO" for an answer?
  • If you are going home with someone different, let someone know. Introduce them to your friends.
  • If you still want to be even more cautious, consider purchasing drink testing strips. Test your drink by simply dipping it in your glass. These strips will change color if any drug is detected

Party Safety Tips

As summer approaches many people begin to think about barbeques and parties. However, they are not thinking about the danger that could be involved when people get together and do what naturally comes with this summer pastime… the consumption of alcohol. The most important tip we can offer for party safety is to be aware of the danger signs and plot an escape route. If you have to drink, remember, alcohol can affect your ability to make decisions. Manage how much you consume and look out for your friends. Here are a few safety tips you should familiarize yourself with when going to or throwing your own party.

Going To A Party? Remember these tips!

  • Always get your own drink or watch it being poured.
  • Don't leave your drink unattended and do not drink or taste anyone else's drink.
  • Don't accept drinks from anyone else.
  • Dispose of your drink if you think it tastes odd. If you just leave it, someone else may drink it.
Drugs used to spike drinks can be colorless, tasteless and odorless, so you might not realize that something has been added to your drink.
  • If your friend’s behavior is out of character, or they seem too "out of it" for what they have had, their drink might have been spiked.
  • Watch out for your friends and make sure they are making safe decisions.
  • If your friend needs to sober up check to see if they are alone, or is someone with them and are they safe.
  • Encourage people who are drunk to drink water, which will help lessen the concentration of the alcohol in their system or eat something. Keep an eye on them and do not let them leave the party with their car keys.
  • If you are going home with someone you do not know too well, introduce them to your friends before you leave.

Throwing A Party? Keep Your Guests Safe!

  • Create a safe atmosphere. If you know that someone is harassing or intimidating someone else, then do something about it by letting them know you are watching, ask the person to stop or leave, find a safe place for the victim and do not be afraid to call 911.
  • Know whom you have invited to the party and plan what you will do if someone crashes it.
  • Provide food and drink spacers, such as water, soft drinks, or juice.
  • Keep an eye on your guests. Make sure they are safe and having a good time.
  • Offer to call a taxi for your guests and make note of the taxi company you’ve called.

Please follow these and other simple safety tips. Also consider taking a self defense product, especially if you don't know most of the people attending the party. Enjoy your summer!

Don't Become a Victim of Date Rape Drugs

With the Holidays approaching there will be more opportunities for women to get date raped. This is the time when there are large groups of people celebrating and probably when there is the most drinking of alcohol. The time when your guard is set aside and you just want to enjoy the festivities. DON'T let this happen! You can still enjoy but also be OnGuard. Below are some steps you can take to avoid these assaults:
  1. Don't accept open drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) from others who you do not know or do not trust; this includes drinks that come in a glass.
  2. When in bars or clubs always get your drink directly from the bartender and do not take your eyes off the bartender or your order; don't use the waitress or let somebody go to the bar for you.
  3. At parties, only accept drinks in closed containers: bottles, cans or tetra packs.
  4. Never leave your drink unattended or turn your back on your table.
  5. Do not drink from open beverage sources like punch bowls, pitchers or tubs.
  6. Keep your eyes and ears open; if there is talk of date rape drugs or if friends seem "too intoxicated" for what they have taken, leave the party or club immediately and don't go back.
If you still want to be even more cautious, there is a new system you can use to make sure your drink is safe called "Drink Safe Technology". This is a package of paper strips or coasters you can purchase that lets you test your drink by dipping it in your glass, similar to the test strips we used in chemistry class. These strips will change color if any drug is detected. You can carry these in your purse or pocket. To get more information about this system visit: www.drinksafetech.com.au

Have a great and SAFE holiday.

Martha
